I just decided that I would like to go camping this memorial day weekend. I know places will be packed. I would like to go somewhere in So Cal

Just now? You're kidding. It's Monday, and it's less than 4 days away now.

DUH!

If you want to get a campsite in Socal, you need to think about it before Nov 1, then go to reserveamerica.com to get your reservation.

Sad to say, but that's the way it is now. I woudn't mind seeing the reservation day moved up 3 months, so you are making reservations only 3-4 months in advance.

You're going to have to try for some of the first-come, first-served campsites, like Jalama Beach or Lake Cachuma. Or go to reserveamerica.com and see if there are any cancellations, or any space at some of the lesser-used campgrounds.

Also, Google "Big Bear Campgrounds" for a list of some NFS campgrounds, like Serrano.

Next year, plan ahead!

It's really a pain in the butt that the California State Parks take reservations, huh? I'm like you---prefer to go camping when I feel like it rather than plan it out 7 months in advance. So, basically, don't count on any campground that's a part of the California State Parks system to have openings. Since they "own" beach camping in So Cal, I hope you don't want to camp at the beach. If you do, then it will have to be at a private place. You didn't say if you have an RV or a tent. Huntington by the Sea in Huntington Beach is good if you have an RV or other camping vehicle. Newport Dunes in Newport Beach is good & accepts tents. Expect to pay prime bucks, though.

If you'll accept National Forest camping (which is most often first-come/first-serve), you can find a nice mountain spot that'll cost lots less than a private facility at the beach. In San Diego County, you'll find some nice NF campgrounds by heading east on Interstate 8, then north on Route S1.

In Orange County, you can find some NF campgrounds by heading east out of San Juan Capistrano on Route 74 towards Lake Elsinore.

In LA County, you can find NF campgrounds on Angeles National Forest property. Here's a link to the NF camping map: http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisitormaps/angeles/

Sometimes you just have to drive. Start heading in the direction that you would like to end up and check into every RV/camp place that you come to until you find one that has a vacancy.
