I filed my taxes this yr (07) and I owed money. I mailed them the money and a month later they sent me a check for the same amount that I just paid. Why would they do this? Does this mean that I am about to be audited?

Anyone have any similiar experience? Do they send back the money you paid if you are going to be audited?

Most likely they found an error on your return and you didn't actually owe any tax. If you didn't get a letter with the check, one should follow shortly.

If you don't hear from them within about 30 days, give them a call and ask what's going on.

It does NOT mean that you are being audited! (OK, it doesn't mean you won't be either but if the IRS thinks you owe they will always accept your payment.)

If the IRS believes you owe tax, they will not return payment. It is unlikely that you will be audited.

You made an error on the return, and did not owe what you sent in. What I would be interested in, is are you entitled to a refund? The IRS will not volunteer to pay you a refund if you didn't request it.

So have your return examined by a preparer to see if you can get a refund by filing an amended return. At the same time, the preparer examining your return may be able to explain to you why you did not owe what you thought you owed.

Along with the check wasn't there a letter of explaination with a number you could call if you had any questions?

this means you are going to get audited. they sent the money back, so that their investigators can start from scratch and see where ur really at. watch out, and pray dude.
