My friend has not filed her taxes since 2004. She finally has asked me to file them for her (I file my own online using hrblock.com)

Can i do this all at once right now somewhere online?

Is there a place I can see an estimate of the penalties prior to filing?

Thanks in advance for your response.

There is this website http://www.priortax.com/ and of course directly through the IRS web site http://www.irs.com/

Remember there are only penalties if she owes for any of those tax years.

She can file her 2006 return on line through the IRS' Free E-File program if she's like most taxpayers. Or she could use a commercial tax prep sofware package.

The returns for 2004 and 2005 must be printed out and mailed in. You cannot e-file for those years. The e-file deadline is in October of the year the return was due.

If she is due a refund for each of the 3 years there will not be any penalties. If she owes for the any of the years there will be penalties for late filing and penalties and interest for late payment. The calculations are complex but it can easily add 50% to an old tax bill. You can't file a prior year return online - the IRS doesn't accept them. So 2004 and 2005 will have to be filed on paper, and mailed in.

Penalties are calculated on the amount owed. There is an explanation of the penalties on page 19 of IRS Publication 17 under the heading "penalties" - you can download it at irs.gov

Depending on her income, with the two children and all income W-2 she might not owe anything and might have refunds coming. Be sure to check if she's eligible for EIC. If she doesn't owe for a given year, then there's no penalty for filing late.

Theoretically, you may desire to get in worry. To be on the risk-free ingredient, you may document for 2006 now. although, if all your earnings from Feb. 2006 to Dec. 2006 replaced into non-taxable, you won't have made sufficient in 2006 to be required to document for 2006.

You need to see an income tax business in person because of the fact she hasn't filed in 3 yrs. they can do a better job for her versus going online because their might be complications that need to be handled in person to get the best results for her.
