Asbestos, in dust or microfiber form, when breathed into the lung, or inhaled and ingested, is harmful and dangerous to a person's health without proper dust masks and or clothing. It stays in the lungs and stomach there because the natural ability of the lung and stomach to 'move' it out by cilia cannot be done. The sharp microscopic nature of asbestos tends imbed itself in the passage linings. It destroys the arriving white cells that tries to remove the foreign object, which in turn causes more white cells to show up; it is a vicious cycle of damage response. A form of cancer results.

Yes, its been established as a serious health threat, I think it can cause a type of lung cancer.
