Well first of all 2 year contracts are always training + 2 years.. so you'll go to basic training for 9 weeks and then another couple months for your MOS school and after that your two years begin from that point. I was in the recruiters office the other day on their live computer program and it has all the current contracts they can reserve for you.. and right now you basically cannot get a two year deal. The shortest length they seem to be offering at this time is three years. With the shorter contracts you are required to go into an MOS that has a shorter length school and is in high demand. You might be able to go airborne but they might say something at last minute like oh yeah if you want to do this you have to extend your enlistment 2 years or some bs.... Do not take things people say on here as fact because people who are saying they have been in the service and everything have been giving totally false answers. And if you ever do join make sure everything you have been offered is written legibility in your contract before you sign.. This means if you are told you will be a sniper it better say guaranteed sniper on your contract, same with the 3 years and any bonus, college money or other incentive promised.. NEVER trust a recruiter .. i have talked to over 10 different ones in past couple months and every single one has told me at least one lie or complete exaggeration about somethin or another..

it is actually National Call to Service.. 15 months of Active Duty after all training, followed by a mandatory 24 months in the Reserves. The Navy is actually phasing this out, as the original purpose( to beef up the Reserves Component) has been achieved.
There are very few ratings open int his program, namely HM, YN and and a couple of other non technical ones.
regardless ANYONE enblisting incurs an EIGHT year total obligation. How much of that is AD or Reserves will depend onthe actual rating you get as well as some other factors..like Needs of the Navy.

The enlistment you are asking about was under the National Call To Service program. The Navy is no longer doing that program and is in a reduction phase. Maybe the other services are still offering it. Can't tell you much about it.

i believe i read on about.com that they have no 2 yr enlistment and very few 3 year enlistments now because that is not enough time either for all the training you will receive and you wont get nearly as many benefits for a 3 year enlistment as a 4 year.
Read the link below, and good luck!

You are more then likely going to have to speak with your recruiter, with 2 years you are going to have school and basic so that cuts into it.. You are also going to want to think about IRR when you join the military you are on an 8 year contract to be called back, so if you serve 2 you have 6 left.. So think about a longer time you will get a better life lesson out of it too...

know that you won't get all the benefits if you sign a two year enlistment... every branch will have call to serve options come available every now and then... but you won't get the GI bill and things like that. and you will still have to do your time in the Inactive Ready Reserves. You have to talk to a recruiter to see what jobs are available though

I would think there would be too much training for a
2 year enlistment. I have never seen a 2 year enlistment unless it was a re-enlistment. Most are a 8 year enlisted with regular duty & reserves.

I don't think they offer 2 year enlistments any more. I think its 3 and up. Think about it - 2 years by the time you get done with all your training and school (basic and AIT) its almost time to go home.
