(spare the lecture on locking). I have a schwinn varsity 2006 (walmart). Retail is $199. I could buy new wheel set and cassette from the local bike shop for about the same; $200 (albeit, likely higher quality) OR I could buy a new bike. If I decide to buy the wheels/cassette, what should I look for in the cassette (ie will any cassette work for my bike)?

Here is an alternative. Look for a bike at yard sales, flea markets, pawn shops, or ebay that has the size wheels you need. Since you don't care what condition the rest of the bike is in, you may be able to find something for as little as $10-20. Just about any front wheel the same size will do. At most you might need new wheel bearings or a quick release axle. The rear will be a little trickier, but if you are lucky you might find a wheel/hub/cassette combo that's a perfect fit. If not, these can be replaced for significantly less than the cost of a whole new wheelset. Just be sure to have your "new" wheelset assembled and trued by a professional.

You might look for a used bicycle similar to yours and buy it for a lot less. I wouldn't spend $200 on wheels for a $200 bicycle. Wal-Mart bicycles are okay if you only ride a little. If you want to do a lot of riding, I would also suggest going to a local bicycle shop and getting a decent bicycle. I would think you could find something around $400 or so that would be a lot better than your bicycle after spending $200 for the new wheels.

Go for a branded manufacturer - SRAM or Shimano. The rest will depend upon how many gears you have. Also, go for a decent hub, again branded. Hope are one of the better makes, but you could get a Shimano hub - Deore minimum. Rims are also very important. Go for a decent alloy.

The question is, is your Schwinn frame worth all of the attention. Sell the frame on e-bay and spend at least $4-500 on your next bike.

Luck

Yes, just about every bike these days has a "quick release" front wheel. In fact, I haven't seen a new bike without one in years.

I would just pick up another bike from wal-mart. Rather that dumping 200 dollars into a bike that is not worth it. You might look on ebay or craigs list you can probably find your wheels on there, or a new bike for less than 200.

Sorry about your luck.

If it's a Wal-Mart bike, it's not worth the trouble. Go to a real bike shop and tell them your woes, and they might swing you a deal on a better bike out of sympathy.

Besides, you'll get a frame size that fits you better as well as a year (or lifetime) of free adjustments and/or checkups, all from people that know how to work on bikes. Wal-mart bikes are "built" by a stoned stockboy with a hammer and a pair of vice-grips, and are not really bikes anyway.

if you are going to pay that much for wheels. you should get a better bike. try your locale bike shop and look at danscomp.com and compare prices and whant you like. if not any wheel and cassette should work.
