i love carpet in bedrooms and living rooms cuz i enjoy sitting on the floor. the rest of my home is easy maintenance tile which stays cool in the summer and can be covered with rugs for warmth in the winter. i've chosen darker colors to hide stains and scuff marks.
your choice will be dependent on upkeep, initial expense, and what you personally prefer.

Good question:)
I would go with a combination of hardwood flooring, tile and a select few area rugs.
Carpet is generally not the best of choices because it is always dirty even after you clean it and it wears out. Use area rugs that can be tossed or professionally cleaned. Carpet is dirtier than the average city street.
There is no such thing as plain wood. There are a million types with a million options. Hardwood flooring can be beautiful if done right. It is not the best of options for bathrooms, kitchens and other high traffic areas. This is because you will have to sand and refinish it every couple years.
Linoleum is seen as cheap. It just screams "cheap" avoid it everywhere but maybe a laundry room or a kids bathroom.
Tile can be the best choice. As long as it is done properly over a solid sub-floor it can last forever even if the look went out of style years ago. This is why you should stick to natural stone type tiles. Natural looking stone products tend to stay in style better than other types. Porcelain tiles are stronger than ceramic tiles if you are looking for durability. Natural stones are beautiful, cost more, and some are very fragile when it comes to stains. Be careful when buying natural stone. Tile is also cold during the winter, so area rugs work as a nice accent and a warm place for the feet.

This i find a very interesting question, for the fact that with my history of moving over the years, as well as cleaning houses, i have always said how beautiful a house looks when entirely done with tiles. The tiles i would recommend are the non-slip variety, mainly to avoid accidents with young or elderly, should there ever be an accidental spillage on floor. Timber floors are nice, except if you have children running around, trust me (grandmother of 9 ), these timber walls and floors cause a lot of echo.If you go tiles or wood, be prepared with matching rugs for winter. good luck.

It depends on what you're going to use the area for. Regardless, you want to use a wood sub-floor.
If you're deciding between carpet and linoleum, they are virtually the same cost, so go with what you think will work best for you. Wood floors are beautiful, but they do take a bit of care; and, if you have kids, you have to be careful they don't beat them up. Ceramic tile is gorgeous; but it's expensive and COLD.

Flooring depends on where and how you live.
The current style seems to be hardwood or laminate,
even in baths and kitchens. I have a family member in a whellchair, so that works well. Caret is hard for a
push type wheelchair user to get across, so it is not a good choice for me. Cement, hardwood, vinyl and a good quality laminate are good flooring types in my circumstances.
Carpet is good to soften sound, especially in an open floor plan. I like to run around barefoot, so I like carpet; we have it
in some rooms, but not all.

Most prefinished wood flooring requires maintenance, and with proper care they will last for years. Prefinished wood flooring range from practical to whimsical. Both make strong designs statements if they work with the rest of the room.
