...the ones who have lived here for 20 years, have paid their taxes, not abused services, and whose children are top of their class? In other words, not the drain on society that we make everyone else out to be. Yes, that is the rarity, but they are out there. How do we deal with them?

pickme_american - actually you're the one without the facts:

many illegals DO pay taxes believe it or not...and why? Because they've been hoping for amnesty all these years.

If they have lived here that long, pay taxes and stay out of trouble, I can't see just kicking them out. They are more American than Mexican. Nationality is a decision, color of skin at birth, God's decision. You said 20 years, so that is was I based my answer on, not someone who hopped the border a month ago and is looking for a silver platter.

This is a great question. It also makes me think of something else:
How fair is this new immigration policy put forth by the government? By fair I mean how fair is it that they will nearly grant amnesty (for a price) to 12 million illegals, while people like my grandparents had to go through the proper channels to become US citizens over 60 years ago.
What about all of those who have naturalized the RIGHT way? This new policy is kind of a slap in the face to those went about naturalizing the right way.
As for what do you do with all the illegals? Sadly, they are breaking the law, granted a lot of them are contributing and have children that are beneficial to the future of this country...but the fact remains, they are here illegally.
Our judicial system would be even more bogged down by trying to prosecute and deport every single one of them - so what do you do?
Great question.
EDIT: It is important for everyone to remember that illegal is not defined as "mexican". Granted a large number of illegals are Mexican, but there are still a lot of illegals that ARE NOT Mexican.

So, if someone holds up a gas station and forever after is a model citizen and his children are tops of their class, it is all right for them to hold up the gas station in the first place? What would happen to you if you went to Mexico (or Germany, or where ever) illegally? What is happening in France?
There should be amnesty in the situation you outlined, but the U.S. is now the third most populous country on earth. Shortages, water, food, everything, are just over the horizon. Another thing, if we do not enforce immigration laws, why bother? Let chaos take over.

If they broke the law, then send them back. They know if they have done so or not.
If a person killed someone else, they would still expect that person to pay their dues for their actions.

They go home, like those on H1 visas and legal temp visa holders, and apply. By the way, how many of their children are really top of the class, please! Ever check the names of those on those making the lists of SAT semi-finalists and finalists published? How many of them are kids of today's illegal aliens???? How many of them have Hispanic names? Does that mean that Hispanic kids are lazy?
How dare that Hispanic accented radio-honker on Larry King's show say that Americans don't work hard! And why is Larry King so set on getting Hispanic-accented guests to tell America how it should run its immigration policies? We don't see accented Europeans or accented Asians telling us what we should do with our immigration policies, do we????

The key word is in your opening, illegal. I could care less if its 1 day, or 40 years, nor what country, nor what color. I could care less how many kids they have, nor how good they are. Illegal is illegal. And the fine as of right now is deportation, as always should be.
