I have been running Ubuntu on all my pcs ( 3 of them ) for quite a while now.

Firstly let me state , that I have absolutely no need for gaming on a pc ( that's what the consoles are for ) , so my uses are website design , general office work , database , graphics packages , music creation ( Midi ) and playing of mp3s etc , plus videos through VLC.

As far as these aspects go , my pcs have never crashed and one of them is turned on 24/7 as a work pc.
They are immune to all Windows spyware , viruses and trojans so for anyone to suggest to me that I should go back to a system where I need to pay for software and the operatig system ,I tell them to think again.

In fact , i give copies of Ubuntu O/S to all my customers that want it for them to try - if Linux is to be a real alternative to Windows then we need to spread it as far as possible.

If you want to play games, then stick with XP.
For everything else , there is Linux.

I've tried most of them, but still using XP. I like the familiarity of using windows, Microsoft Office, etc. Just find it's friendlier than linux. I typically had driver issues with linux which is surprising since I have an IBM laptop.

Ubuntu was my fav other than windows. Esp with the alternate user interfaces.

If you are a software engineer, Linux could be a great os. I've used Mandrake, it comes with the compilers for the popular programming languages.

If your into games or office/home applications, I like XP. Most popular games and applications work on XP.

Best - for what? How do you intend to use your PC? If for some kind of toying only, it will be better to use some "live CD" as Knoppix. If you want to *work* with it, select here:

I like ubuntu. It's pretty easy to figure out and use. It also does a good job of working with most of your computer's hardware (printers, sound cards, graphics cards, modems, etc.)
