My boyfriend (of almost a year) and I have decided to get promise rings. We're both almost 18, and went to church together for 2 years, until my family left (crappy!), and we now go to the same school. We are completely in love, and no, its not sissy high school love either. :D We're both quite aware that we might break up and never see eachother again, but at this point, we want to try to make it. However, we don't want these promise rings to be 'pre-engagement' rings.

Any advice; like what we should promise, ring ideas... etc. :D

thanks.

Sorry, but promise rings really ARE pre-engagement rings! If you think you're going to stick it out, then get promise rings; if not then don't. Of course if you do get the rings and do break up in the future, then the rings will serve as a memento of your bygone relationship and the fond memories you have of that time in your life.

I would say get something simple, definately not with a diamond if you're trying to stay away from the engagement connations. If you google "promise rings" you should find some nice designs in the region of $200 or less which sound perfect for you. Maybe something with Celtic knotwork or art deco in style? Something that at first glance people are not going to assume is an engagement ring. You could both also wear your rings on your right ring fingers instead of the traditional left which married couples use.

How do I know this? I had the same idea for my boyfriend and myself since I'm moving to another city for a year for graduate school. Something to remind both of us of the relationship and as a comfort/security that we're together for the long haul, even if we're not yet ready for marriage.

You are NOT ready for any of this, because promise rings are indeed sissy high school nonsense. And really, if you have to ask strangers on Yahoo, you are REALLY NOT READY! Either get engaged (you are way too young at almost 18, even though you believe you are worldly and wise), or wait a while. Skip the inane promise rings. They are meaningless.

My boyfriend and I got promise rings before he left for the Army. Ours were to symbolize that I would be waiting for him through it all. That was two years ago, and we're still going strong. (i was 16 at the time). Don't let people tell you that you're too young to be in love. It is great that you are being realistic about your relationship. You can promise anything you like. You can promise to be faithful to each other, to remain friends, or promise that you want to be with each other forever.

In the jewelry stores they have a section for promise rings, but most of the time they only have ones suitable for girls (like two linked hearts. very cutesy) We ordered ours from the internet. These are them: http://www.heavenlytreasures.com/r4478.html
We thought it was nice to have matching ones rather than two different ones. The one in that link can be for either a male or female so it was nice. Try searching around the internet for something unique. Good luck!

You can promise to always be friends no matter where life takes you. A relationship is built on friendship, love and trust.....but friendship first. Then when you shop, make sure to tell the jewler that you are looking only at promise rings. They have a whole section of them.

Promise what you mean. Forget what everyone else has to say about it. It is your relationship, communicate, compromise, agree and then make the vow.

Promise rings are really meaningless, so you can have them mean whatever you want....and yes it is silly high school love but you can delude yourself if you wish.
