It depends on what the City tax is and what the state tax is. By adding these two amounts together, you get the sales tax you would pay for the city that you are visiting or residing in. I live in central california and I pay 7.375% sales tax. You know how when we vote for taxes for our local city? That is what makes up the local sales tax. This web site has a breakdown of how sales taxes are divided. It changes every year or so.

Throughout most of CA that is the tax. There are some municipalities that have approved a higher tax to pay for some necessary repairs or infrastructure. Ask where you are shopping -the local clerks will know the local tax rates.

In Los Angeles, sales tax is 8.25%.
