Chows are one of the most unpredictable dogs
on earth. My insurance company would cancel my house insurance if I owned a Chow.
Consider your cat an appetizer!
or a mid night snack!
Get rid of the Chow! it is as unpredictable as the pit bulls, especially since it is an adult!
Or love me...love my cat...Don't move in until that dog is gone!
Owner of a Border collie, Germain Shepherd and a Basset hound. I have dealt with Chows in the neighborhood, and it was not good, because the owners tended to be as aggressive as the Chows

Hi I own 4 german shepherds one malamute and one siamise cat that weighs about 6 lbs and the dogs know that the cat runs things in these parts. I have two other cats that think the siamise runs the house to. all of my dogs love my cats they sleep together not to say on occation one of the cats will wake up and take a swatt or two at a sleeping dog but cats will be cats. never had a problem but there are things that can help if ther is a problem. Make sure the cat is in a carring cage and the dog is on al eash when they are first intoduced allow them to smell each other watch the body language of the dog if gets a ridgid body posture if the tail goes up and wags verry fast if you can not get the dogs attention do not let them go together the dog will hurt the cat. I fthe dog ignores the cat acts slightly intrested make sure that it is easy to get the dogs attention. keep the dog on the leash and allow the cat out of the carrier again watch body language if the dog gets exited remove the dog from the room. Put the cat bach in the carrier. At this point you know if it will be okay or not if it is not put the cat in a room and allow them to smell through the door for a few days and try again. If it dose not work the second time get a pro their they will be able to help.

That is really dangerous. First of all never leave them together in the same room by themselves. Second, has the chow ever been around a cat before? And third, if the chow has never been around a cat I would introduce them slowly. And if they just can't get alone, set a schedule..like the cat gets to stay out 4 hrs. a day and the chow gets the other 4 hours. Hope it works out!

Keep them separate and the first time you introduce them have the dog on a leash and training collar, I prefer prong collars and put the cat in a crate....so both are under control and no one can get hurt. Just let them smell each other, not nose to nose, just in the same room. Put the cat higher than the dog.
Chows can be very good with cats. actually. If the dog is not obedience trained encourage your bf to get it to some classes. If you go slow and don't leave them alone together and never allow the dog to chase the cat and teach the dog the cat is YOURS and Off Limits then they can be ok.
I've fostered cat killing dogs. I bring them in on choke chain or prong and immediately correct any aggressive postures or even too interested staring. They learn from day one, that the cat is not for them to touch. But my cats were already there, since the dog is on it's own territory, I'd go slow or have a pro help you out.
When they are on a leash and in the crate you should be able to observe any major problems starting. Correct the dog for any over the top excitement, it's not allowed. Dog can calmly sit or lay down and sniff the cat from a distance.
Even in separate rooms the dog will know the cat is in the house.
Yes it can work, keep both safe and under your control.
I had a cat door into a spare room to keep dogs out of litter box and to give the cats a place of their own. I also provide high places for cat to retreat to in other parts of the house. I've also gated dogs off from cats when I left. Just in case.
I used to have up to 6 Whippets and 2 cats and foster dogs. No one was allowed to fight or hurt another animal. Had birds also.

Most cats and dogs get along just FINE. But you need to be SURE this dog won't kill the cat -- some dogs will.
Best thing to do is to get the advice of a professional trainer. Ask your vet for a recommendation.
Until you know for SURE that the dog won't hurt the cat, never let them be alone together -- and keep the dog on a leash.

It will take time for them to get along. When I got my dog he bothered the cats at first, but then he got bored. They will eventually get used to living with each other and just ignore one another. You might freak out at first because the dog will probably chase the cat, but it will be okay. Just make sure the dog is not too rough with the cat, usually the dog just wants to play, but can sometimes get too rough.

My cat ran away for several days when I got my dog but once she got used to the dog she was fine. They even used to curl up together on the sofa.
I would introduce them slowly. What type of personality does the dog have? Once they get used to living together then they should be ok.
Good luck :)

Send the dog to training, it worked for my dog, he won't even get near the cat... If the cat doesn't like the dog coming near him the cat will probably kick the $h!T out of him or run away from him.

The chow owner being aggressive because the dog is comment was not only rude, but stupid as well.. My sister and her husband owned a huge chow named Bear and he actually looked like a bear... They kept him fenced in and had beware of dog signs on the fence as well as all over the yard..chows are very territorial do not take a cat in that house.. They kept their son away from him as well, beautiful dog, but very very dangerous.. My sister and her husband very sweet and non violent...
