...really unable to open the docs at their end? They always reject the document and request one in MS Word (I don't have Word).

Are they just being lazy? What's the big deal?

The recipient can convert the file to Word by using a free, online converter at www.media-convert.com
or
you could save them the trouble by saving your Word file as a text file
File
Save AS
on the bottom left, where it says filetype, click the down arrow and select txt.

Send your friend the txt file.

Your friend can also download a Word viewer at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en

Word and Works are two different programs - Works does not have the full capability of Word.

No.. they can open a works document with Word. You can download and office suite for free at http://www.openoffice.org. As a matter of fact, you can even save them in word, excel, and access formats too.
