Does anyone have any good home remedies for easing the pain from a sore throat? My son has strep throat and the over the counter stuff just doesn't seem to be helping him. Any ideas?

I have taken him to the doctor and he is on Amoxil. He just started hurting over the weekend and he's had two doses of the medicine. However, his throat still hurts. What I want to know is if anyone knows anything that will help with that until the antibiotics get into his system and start killing the bacteria.

Once again, I have taken him to the doctor. He is taking antibiotics. His throat is still sore. Forget about the "strep" part of the question. Does anyone know of anything that will help ease a sore throat?

Strep throat requires antibiotics only prescribed by the doctor.
**EDIT
Well, then if he's on antibiotics already, I'm sure he'll be feeling better by tomorrow, or he SHOULD be. But for now, all you can really have him do is gargle saltwater or eat cold things like popcicles/ice cream. There are throat numbing sprays too.

If it really is strep throat, it is a bacterial infection requiring antibiotics. Gargling with warm salt water will alleviate some pain but antibiotics will get rid of it. The only way to know for sure is to get a culture swab taken of the throat to determine if it is really strep throat.

If your son was diagnosed by a doctor with strep throat, then he should be on antibiotics and thus would not require any home remedies. If he hasn't been diagnosed by a doctor with strep throat, then you should take him to see one to get a throat culture. Any time your son (or any child) has a sore throat and fever, you should take him to the doctor to get 1) a throat culture and 2) an ASLO antibody titer.
IF HE HAS STREP THROAT HE NEEDS TO BE ON ANTIBIOTICS. There are some extremely serious consequences of not appropriately treating strep throat, like rheumatic fever and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. Both of these conditions are serious and require hospilization and neither are prevented with home remedies.

They say a salt water gargle is good. I'd just make up maybe a 10 parts water to 1 part salt and see if it helps. The amox will kick in soon, but some can be very stuborn and painful. Good luck!

Not unless you can manufacture some antibiotics!! My husband and I took our 12 yr. old son to the Dr., just this morning for the same thing. After the test was done, the Dr., explained that this type of bacterial strain needs to be destroyed as soon as possible in order for the heart not to be affected. This bacteria destroys the muscles in the heart if not taken care of immediately. According to our pediatrician, the end result could be dangerous. I suggest you take your child to his pediatrician immediately for treatment..

When I had strep I used cephacol losenges. They have a anasthetic in them so they deaden the back of your throat.

Take one glass of water mix it with1tsp pepper, 1tsp turmeric, 1tsp garlic, 1tsp small onion, 1tsp ginger and 1tsp of sugar. Boil it until it becomes 1/2 glass; drink it while it is warm. More remedies available at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Sure.
Take your son to a doctor. Get prescriptions, have them filled.
Then bring your kid and his medicine back home and give him the meds.
Quit putzing around and take your kid to the doctor, you might well be misdiagnosing the problem.

We always gargled with warm salt water, but you need to remind him not to swallow. My mother-in-law always used to swab her kids' throats with merthiolate with a long swab - it helps, but it's nasty.
