Hi John. You are heading in the right direction by considering separates amplifiers. I have always advised potential buyers on answers to choose a separate surround sound preamp and multichannel power amp for their home theater. That way you will get higher fidelity sound which is often missing in a integrated receiver.
I am not familiar with the brand Emotiva. The specifications look impressive but i would want to know a few things about it.Is the power output of 150 watts per channel available when all channels are working and is that a continuous power rating on all channels.Does it have a musical quality which is pleasant to the ear and does not sound harsh after listening for a while. This is where a lot of amps fail .
The only amps that i know of that have a sweet musical quality to their sound a re made by nad. They are the only ones i trust when it comes to power output and specifications. They are actually designed in Great Britain and assembled in the east. I use one myself as the preamp of my system .I am not trying to dissuade you from buying the Emotiva system i'm only giving you some information about another brand which is just as good if not better.I hope you get a great system which will give you a lot of pleasure
Here is the link to compare the nad.

Emotiva has been getting great reviews on allot of A/V forums. I have not heard them first hand. If you are thinking about another brand to compare, I highly recommend Arcam in the same price range, they offer both AVR and Pre/amp/tuner. The Diva AVR series is one of the best on the market. I plan on getting a AVR300 in the coming months.

I say go for it. I'm sure there is a money back guarantee? Shipping would spendy, but the price is great.

If your not against pre-owned high-end, check out audiogon.com
There are tons of power amps and pre/processors for sale.
As long as you buy from a reputable person your fine.

What loudspeakers are you running? What are using now?

Forge that other guy, every post I see of his he says NAD this and NAD that. I hate the name NAD(s).
