I filed my taxes on january 23rd 07. I filed them electronically but i made a mistake. When entering the federal witholdings i accidentally put a 7 instead of a 6, which caused my refund to be 1000 too much. I immediately called my local branch of the IRS to report my mistake and see what if anything i should do. He told me it happens an lo t and that their computers would flag it, and fix it. Its now May and nobody seems to know whats going on. They tell me they are still reviewing my simple 1040ez and that they have no answers for me. Is this the norm. I made a mistake i admit that, but i also did the right thing and reported it right away, is this a normal waiting time. I could really use that money right about now.

Don't worry, the IRS can be slow getting back to you, even though you owe THEM but, rest assured they will.
They are aware that you have contacted them and they should recognize this when they finally get around to sending you their notification of the money you owe.

The best thing to do is be sure you have a record/copies of everything you did when you contacted them: date, time, who you talked with, etc.

It wouldn't hurt anything if by, let's say this July, you haven't heard anything from them yet, to give them another call, "just for the record". Make sure you have the money you owe them available when they ask you for it.

You could also go ahead and file an "Amended Return"
Here's a link to the IRS website to explain how to do it or at least there's information that can help:

Ok, I found this in the FAQ's:

Question:
I received a refund that is more than I should have received because I've discovered I made a mistake on my return. I have not yet cashed this check. What should I do now?

Answer:
Many mistakes are corrected in processing and a letter of explanation is mailed at the time the refund is issued. If the mistake was not corrected in processing, you need to file an amended or corrected return using Form 1040X (PDF), Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, as soon as possible. Include copies of any schedules that have been changed or any Form W-2 (PDF) you did not include. If you return the refund check with a letter of explanation, a refund in the correct amount will be issued when the amended return processes.

Good luck!

Once a return is kicked out from the automatic processing, it can take quite awhile to get it fixed.

deposit it in a high yield savings account, and forget about it. If they ever come calling for the money, you'll have made a few bucks in interest in the meantime. If its still there when you retire, celebrate your good luck.
