I'm not saying this to be hurtful to women. I am currently going to College for a degree in Engineering. The ratio of men to women students in the engineering department is 8 to 1, meaning that for every 8 men, there is only 1 girl. The girls that I'm in classes with do just as good as the men. I'm just curious if women are being told to stay away from engineering by there parents or they are just scared. I know it has nothing to do with your intelligence. If you’re a girl, what do you think the answer to my question is?

rccola1979: I think you need to chill out and reread the question.

Now, to answer the question, I am not really sure. Though, on average, men do have somewhat of a tendency to excel more in the math and sciences. Now, that is NOT, I repeat, NOT, say it with me now, NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT to say that women are bad in those fields or should not go into them. It just means that mens' brains tend to be wired more for that kind of stuff, just like women's brains tend to be more wired for language, etc. That is NOT to say that there are no exceptions to this, however.

I think it is a combination of things. Women aren't expected to like math or sciences. Certainly these days that stereotype is disappearing, but still. Also, women aren't as expected to 'bring home the bacon' as much as men, so they can just do whatever they like. Also, today, not so much..

Maybe it is a real inherent thing for some people though. Maybe some women are just better at relating to people and like things involving emotion more than logic.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that overall, currently, more women are going to college in general than men, and I consider this a step in the right direction.

I mean, whatever you want to do, you should be able to do it. So if you're a women who just wants to raise her kids and be involved with her community, you should be able to do it without feminists glaring. And if you want to start up your own engineering firm, that too. or both.

Hi there. I will say that you may be correct (being a girl...aka woman). My son asked the other day (I have 3 boys) if I played soccer when I was a girl. I said "No, I was a cheerleader". And as I thought about it I started wondering if there were any sport teams for girls when I was a kid. I called my mom (BTW) and she said "no, It was not heard of back then (25 yrs. ago! How far we have come!)". My point here is: as women of my generation come of age maybe we will see more women taking a front role. Another point from my 8 yr old. Today we had the end of yr. awards ceremonies. There were 5 awards given. 4 for subjects...math, science, reading and social studies and 1trophied for overall excellent student. In EVERY class 4 of the awards were given to girls and 1 to a boy. And in EVERY class the trophy went to a GIRL! I leaned over to the mother next to me and said..."1 more generation and we (women) take over the world"!

i think of it has lots to do with how that's finished. at school i replaced into abused via the different scholars. Being a foster baby i did no longer have the clothing or the flaws the different scholars did. My instructor pronounced i replaced into purely wasteing the tax payers money i could advance as much as prostitute or sell drugs. So I left the highschool. After flunking out of high school and flunking math. I later after waiting tables desperate to flow decrease back and get my GED. At person night college with a gaggle of different people who had experienced a similar scientific care. Then began VOTECH and after lots attempting out chanced on I had a great variety of skills in math, and accounting. I graduated as an accountant and all got to work for a shape business business enterprise as an accountant. After journey they make 35 to 40 two,000. consistent with 3 hundred and sixty 5 days. Then labored as much as assistant supervisor. Now with none help I relatively have offered my living house and quite much have it paid for. I force a staggering motor vehicle and characteristic a stable earnings. That proves absolutely everyone can do it! So in the event that they inform you your dumb and could't learn. they're incorrect you purely prefer a distinctive environment. by no ability enable them to place you down or say it could't be performed.

Because we have been taught three things since birth. 1. that girls can't do math as well as boys 2. It is unladylike to pursue a career that is usually held by a man. 3.It is a tough world for a woman in a man's job.
And the older a woman is, the more they believe it.
Thankfully, some of us don't buy into that, and pursue the career we want.
I liked Beth I's answer. In my day, in my state, there were no school sponsored sports for girls. It was illegal. We were cheerleaders, or spectators.

I would find it intimidating to go to a school where it’s mostly boys. Even looking at schools, I didn't really consider ones with low girl-to-boy ratios because I wanted to have more of a social life. I would assume other girls would feel the same way. I’m not sure how this would apply to majors though- I’m a chem. major and there are plenty of girls in my math & science classes...

I was one of those female engineering students. Let me try to help you.

When girls hit puberty, they become interested in boys. The typical thing to get boys to like you is to act dumber than they are. Since most boys are idiots, that means girls really have to dumb down.

Additionally, teachers have a bias in the math and sciences (this has been proven). They think boys do better, so they do things to reinforce that worldview.

For all the work that the feminists have done over my lifetime, I still see girls caring more about what they put on their face (makeup) and bodies (clothes) than what goes into their brains. True, I see a lot of guys getting that way now, too.

And there are still a lot of parents that reinforce the age-old stereotypes.

It could also be that engineering isn't as wonderful and lucrative a career as people thought 20 or so years ago.

You're an idiot... I'm a girl.. in four years of high school I took algebra 2, geometry, geometry 2, precalculus, calculus, accounting, physical science, biology, chemistry, environmental science, anatomy, and physics. Most of my friends that were girls took the same classes.

In fact, many of the girls in my class and the class ahead of me took all these classes.

Why would anyone's parents tell their kids to stay away from engineering?

How's this for a question? Why do so many men go into engineering even though they have no mechanical abilities?

Here's an answer to your question: I love math. I love science. I love anything that is challenging. I'm the only one in my immediate family with any mechanical abilities as far as tools and stuff go, and I'm a hairstylist... why??? Because I like doing hair

And hey... for that moron who said that girls care more about what they put on their face and body and blah blah blah...

I love clothes, I love shoes, I love makeup, I love haircolor.. I graduated with a 3.98 gpa. I got accepted to every college I applied to. I got accepted to one of the hardest schools in my state to get into. Just because a girl likes hair and makeup doesn't mean she's an idiot.. but you may be for implying that

because the engineer majors are usually geeky and most girls want classes with cute guys in them.

re:i never said geeky guys don't make better boyfriends.i would be more motivated and look forward to going to class, if there were some eye-candy lol i'm a computer programming major and that's considered geeky and have cute people in that class.basically, engineering is not my thing, not due to the geek factor.

I'm not sure what the answer to your question is, but in my own experience, I love science and understand it quite well, hate maths, but know enough to get me by. And maybe women just don't want to work in the field you are currently studying. Don't overthink it.
