I did an I.V. recently and it was surreal. They tell you to count to ten and before you can focus on what the first number is you're out. You know how when you go to sleep and then wake up you have some sense of the time that passed. Well, not with this stuff. When I woke up an hour and a half later, it was like no time had passed at all. It was great. A friend of mine had the same thing and when he woke up he asked the doctor if they could do it again.

General anesthesia is a very scary thing, especially if you are not familiar with the mechanics of it. There really is nothing to be scared about though. They will give you a preoperative medication first, like Valium or Versed and Demerol. That will take a lot of the anxiety away. Once they get you on the OR table the Anesthesiologist will tell you everything they are going to do and exactly how you will feel. It's just like floating and going to sleep. They will inject the sodium pentothal into your IV and you might get a little garlic taste in your mouth. They will tell you to count backwards from 10 and if you make it to 8 before you are out you are a superhero. Anesthesia is very safe these days. Don't worry for a second. You will be well taken care of and monitored the entire time and when your surgery is over they will give you some medication to reverse the anesthesia and you are on your road to recovery. All the best to you. Don't worry!

I'm assuming that by saying "put under anesthesia", you mean that you're going to be given gas instead of just an IV.
I've had surgery numerous times and in my opinion, the feeling is less like "fading away" and more like falling asleep. You feel tingly and sleepy (possibly even a little woozy), and then you're out. It's fairly fast and I don't think it's scary at all.
Hope this helps!

I was put under anesthesia when I was four for a hernia surgery. I am sixteen now, but I still remember it pretty vividly. The lady was putting the mask over my face and telling me to breath. However, I, being a four-year-old kid, was scared as hell and crying for my mom. I don t remember there being an IV; however, there may have been. The next thing I remember, I woke up in a room half-naked and confused as ****. The reason I am visiting this forum is because I may have to have a cystogastrostomy in a few weeks.

I've had several surgeries myself. The OR is very cold, so I always remember shivering, but they are more than willing to give you warm blankets, so ask for them if you're cold. They start an IV which usually the last thing you're thinking about. I remember there being a taste like metal in my mouth and that's the saline running in the IV. Then put the mask over my face and tell me to start counting backward from 100. It's really oxygen they're giving you. The stuff that makes you sleep is actually going into the IV. They give you stuff to sleep (versed) and then they give you an amnesiac (propofol) which we call "Milk of Amnesia" lol. It's so you don't remember anything. Next thing you know you're still sleepy and they're annoying you to wake up.

I've been put under anesthesia many times before. It's kind of like everything's fading away, but more like in an "I'm falling asleep really fast" sort of way. Don't worry so much, you'll be fine! Best of luck! :)

When I had mine, I was told to count 1 ~ 10 slowly.
Most people be anesthesia befor they finish counting 9 but i finished 10 and went another round lol. As I count another 1 ~2 I got the same feeling as when i was drunk. I remember i counted 3 but not 4 :)
It was weird, but kinda fun too :D so, don't be afraid ;) you'll be okay :)

It's not that bad. They wheel you into the OR and the anesthesisologist will let you know he/she is putting the mask on your face and to take three or four deep breaths. It doesn't smell like anything except maybe clean air blowing ( the oxygen). Some will have you count to ten. Mine did not. I was asleep by the second breath. There was no "fading." Then what felt like only a cat nap to me was actually a couple of hours. Then they woke me up in another room (recovery room.) Good luck. That's the easy part. The hard part is recovering depending on the sugery. Try not to get all worked up. Just know they tell you not to eat or drink after midnight for a reason. Do everything they instruct you to do and you'll be fine.
