That would be the War of Northern Aggression to those of us south of the Mason-Dixon.

Gettysburg was the furthest north that the Army of Northern Virginia got.
It was the last major offensive battle that Lee launched. The rest of the War he was in a defensive posture.

Because after the devastating losses incurred by the Army of Northern Virginia, they were no longer able to launch a major offensive against the Army of The Potomac! Lee and his subordinates retreated back into Virginia, and never again pressed the Northern states on their own ground! The Northern states with their industry, could replenish and rearm. However, the southern states, being a rural agricultural economy, found it almost impossible to regroup, and rearm without outside assistance!

The south lost the strategic initiative. After Gettysburg, they no longer had the men and material to carry on offensive war, from Gettysburg onward, they were on the tactical retreat.....

because after huge losses the south would never again be able to go on the offensive. the north would bring the war to them and defeat them
