I would definately recommend a Shih Tzu. We now have a 3-year-old male Shih-Tzu and he is wonderful. He weighs 11 pounds and won't get any larger. He is a great "house dog". Was very easy to train and DOESN'T tear anything up. We also have three children, ages 11, 5, and 2 and he is wonderful with them. He is very loving and sometimes can even be like your shadow. He is not very big, but he is loyal and protective. Also, he only barks if something is really wrong. Oh, and did I mention that he is too cute. Check out some books on Shih Tzu pups and you will see what I mean. I hope this helps a little. Good luck in your search.

My Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix fits the description for all of the above. She is 9 pounds and full grown. She is not too high energy or spazzy! She is so cute we have had countless strangers approach us to ask about her. We have had strangers ask us if we would be willing to breed her. I'm not biased, she REALLY is an exceptionally cute dog. I have another small dog. He is a Papillion. He was a stray and had some behavior issues when we got him 5 weeks ago. He is already improving but I don't know about Papillions other than what I've experienced in the past few weeks.

This should help!
Go to www.dogbreedinfo.com
click on "find the perfect dog" at the top
and then click on "Take the breed selector quiz"
It will ask you some questions about what you're looking for, and then suggest some breeds based on temperment, energy level, allergans, good with kids/cats, etc. :)
I would NOT suggest any herding breeds for an apartment, just an fyi. I own an australilan shepherd and a border collie and they do not do well in apartments. ;)

start by checking the AKC website for information; u might want to check the toy group for a smaller dog.
dont just get one becoz they're cute or only match your narrow scope of criteria. some dogs may be very high energy and require stimulation so they arent destructive when you're gone. others require regular trips to the groomers and daily grooming, which takes your time. some bark alot, your neighbors wouldnt appreciate that. after u find a few u like, google those and read up further to narrow your choices before u rescue or search breeders.

ENGLISH BULLDOG puppies were voted second cutest breed after boxers. But you dont want a boxer in an apt, they grow up to be big high energy dogs. Bulldogs on the other hand are very easy going and just lounge around the house. Depending on diet and exercise they rarely get fat, ours aren't
Secondly when my bro brought his bulldog Cujo home as a puppy I didnt want one because I thought they were ugly. But bulldog puppies are sooooooooooo cute. And over time I became vry attached to Cujo. We also adopted his sister Ellie because her owner abused her. We evntually bred her with another and had 5 puppies. We kept the white one and named her Hope. And my bro's foster mom bought the other female named May who is very beautiful.
They have proven to get along very very well with even young children. The kids never stop playing with them. They are very gentle and affectionate despite there rough appearance. They never ever bite. But they have great jaw strength for tug of war lol.
But I swear you gotta give em a chance. I didnt want any but I am now a bulldog lover convert. Hey, even Adam Sandler loves bulldogs. And Ron tator salad White has a bulldog. If you want a loyal breed, that's loving and has great personality and the cutest quirks, GET A BULLDOG.. PLEASE lol.
But bulldogs are not a dog to be left outside alone, they are valuable and known to be stolen. But the bigger risk is overheating, one of the pups my bro sold died from heat exposure when his ownr fell asleep on the couch, my brother was devastated.

Dachshund!
They come in 2 sizes Standard and Miniature and 3 coat types: short haired, long haired and wire haired. Dachshunds don't need much space or exercise but will walk for miles. They are very playful and energetic. Dachshunds are fine with kids if they are well trained. Standards tend t be better suited with children because they are less likely to get hurt but my mini is great with children. Dachshunds are 100% adorable especially minis - I cant walk down the street with mine without somebody saying AWWW!!! Heres some pics:

Dachshunds are overall great dogs: they're loyal, intelligent, playful, energetic, affectionate, adorable, unique and they're the bestest friend you could ever have - what more could you want?

Try a pug, french bulldog, or a bull terrier.
Great temperaments, great with kids when socialized properly.
Or, get a mutt! They are wonderful.
I wouldn't suggest getting a larger dog simply because you live in an apartment.
http://petfinder.com
Try searching google for local rescues. Ex: "Atlanta doberman rescues".
Try your local shelter, as well. 25% of dogs in shelters are purebred if you want a certain breed.
Do not ever buy from a pet shop.
Good luck finding a forever friend!
*edit*
Chihuahuas tend to be very skittish. They also tend to attach themselves to one person in the household and be very protective, sometimes aggressively so. I would not suggest having them with children unless you are very good and experienced at socializing and training dogs. =]

I know I'll probably get razzed for this answer but Great Danes are the ultimate apartment dog. Yes they are BIG but they are quiet, very gentle, good with kids and basically very docile and love to sleep. They require very little excersize and do well at apartment living. I think they are very cute but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You would want a smaller dog. Take a look at some of those at the local SPCA: They should be able to help you find just the right dog.
Good luck!
