Technically all of the boroughs make up New York City, therefor they are all IN the city. Manhattan is just the "main" borough and is often seen as the city because that's where pretty much everything is located (landmarks, tourist destinations, big businesses, etc.). The five boroughs of NYC are Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island. Until you go outside of these five areas, you are still technically in the city. There really aren't any apartments that could be considered as cheap in Manhattan, they all cost a good bit of money even if some are more expensive than others. If you want more affordable rent you have to look outside of Manhattan in the other boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens have become very popular for college students who attend school in Manhattan. Because the rent is better in these areas, and there are still nice neighborhoods there, plus both Brooklyn and Queens are close to Manhattan so it's easy to commute back and forth by the subway if you need to.

NYC is actually all five boroughs, it does get kind of confusing even for us who live here. For example people from Brooklyn call Manhattan the City but people from the Bronx just call it downtown. It's weird. Anyway if you are referring to Manhattan there is housing there depending on what part you are looking for you can find town houses around the city IE the village but majority of Manhattan is apartments and buildings. The other boroughs are more residential. As far as getting from one borough to the other it is very easy by subway or driving although the NYC traffic is pretty bad. The subway is the best bet. I would only suggest not taking the subway from Brooklyn to Queens from my own personal experience it is much easier to drive. :-)

The city of New York consists of 5 boroughs. Commonly when people refer to "the city" if they are not referring to New York City as a whole they are referring to Manhattan. There is both commercial and residential real estate in all of the boroughs. Commuting between the different boroughs varies based on the geographical challenges of each area (i.e. Staten Island is in fact an island), but affordable and effective mass transit is available throughout New York City.

NYC is comprised of all five boroughs. With the exception of Staten Island, who would want to go there anyway, they are all easily accessible through the subway system. As far as housing goes you can live in commercial housing, or as many people do, rent the other apartment in a two family house. Good Luck.

New York City is a city made up of those 5 Buroughs. When most people refer to NYC though, they are speaking of Manhattan. But it is actually all 5. It's quite easy to go from burough to burough on the subway but it takes alot of time. Heck it takes alot of time no matter how you travel around there. Hope that helps
