You know, sometimes we have to say goodbye to the things we know, and say *hello* to the things we don't. ~ : )

I must say I'm partial to Sunman's answer, if only because he invokes the intrepid Bilbo Baggins! Bilbo's dragon wasn't friendly at all! But Bilbo was clever and managed to play on the dragon's weaknesses in order to gain maximum advantage.

Another Tolkien tale involving dragons is "Farmer Giles of Ham." In this tale, the farmer Giles becomes an accidental hero by driving a giant away from his village using a blunderbuss. He is rewarded with a sword for his efforts and the label of "hero." So the villagers call upon him to defend them against a dragon who hears of the kingdom whose knights are too softened by political and court life to rise to the challenge of defense. Giles ends by making a deal with the dragon, who he tracks to a disadvantage at his lair. He makes an alliance with the dragon and takes only part of the treasure. In this he shows more pragmatism and less loyalty to his King who has charged him with slaying the dragon and bringing the treasure. A great tale of an accidental hero and a kingdom that had become too complacent and needed to see the sign "Here be Dragons." Oftentimes you do not go to meet the dragons--they come to meet you! And woe be unto you if you try to run...the dragons will run after you, and you'll spend your life in fear of them and missing great wonders of life!

As for my own dragon, it met me in my own home. I survived, much as Bilbo or Giles, by wits and luck.

I'd move past that sign and continue walking on the path that the dragons dwell. I have done and still do this.

Here in wales, everything is signed dragons dwell. I would just imagine its another hot-pot cafe for a quick sandwich bite and a warm cuppa tea. with a lovely view of sheep.

i will fight of course if i have to step in. and yes i have done tht many times. its better to not stray towards such a path but when i dnt hav a choice i enter, fight, struggle, learn and move ahead. fear or giving up doesnt do u any good. i think there isnt much choice-its mostly a do or die situation.
by the way ur ques sounds more philosophical thn religious.

I went right by the sign without seeing it. Next thing I knew I was in a life or death battle with an invisible, fire breathing scumbag.

Ho ho ho, CD, this one is right up my street !

As the Navigator, I have encountered many charts that say such things, usually around the borders, "here be dragons".

As a general rule, I never used to eat more than three dragons before breakfast, nowadays you hardly ever see them anymore, more's the pity. ;-)

Ah , but who wouldn't want to see a dragon ? I might stand back, like way back in the bushes, but I would have to venture forth.

" If you're going to befriend a dragon, make sure it's a friendly one." Ross
