Luke 14

7When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8"When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited. 9If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, 'Give this man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. 10But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 11For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

They once gave me a badge for humility.
They made me give it back when I started wearing it.

That's merely an exercise in humility.

Better yet, one might ask: If you take the place of humility, do you do so in order that you may be exalted, to be puffed up later? Or do you practice humility because you are truly a humble person?

I think that this is one of the teachings of Jesus that might have been mistranslated or mis-communicated over the years. It is not a teaching in humility, as it stands, but is more a way to avoid being humbled, coupled with a way to be prideful.

It rather than showing humility, appeals to pride. Just one of the confusing lessons in the Bible.

Well, like the man who died and couldn't wait to tell everyone in heaven that he was a witness to the great flood of 1921, and St Peter told him, "Just remember that Noah is here."

I tend to follow the same One he himself followed. Simple common sense dictates this particular ettiquette. On gathering the cultural import of this tale, I can only imagine the people of his time to have been a crude and utterly uncivilised bunch, of poor quality and animal-like tastes.

To answer your question, yes, I do.

I will always leave the closer parking spot to someone else going after the same spot. I'll leave the better seat in a movie for someone who needs it, etc., etc.

Three of the most important words Jesus spoke "Come follow me."
That's what I live for.
