I clicked save, and it appeared to save it, but the little pencil thing at the bottom is still writing. Is it safe to close, or do I need to keep it open until it finishes?

It's a very large document, I copied and pasted it in.

You can close it. It will save just fine. Word won't close completely till it is saved.

I think it should be safe but to be sure save then sit for about 5 minutes and if it doesnt stop writing it may be safe.

to be sure open another word document and copy and paste the whole first document into that one then X out the first one and see in my documents if it saved. If it didn't save then you still have another document thats the same. So its worth a try. And before you exit if it hasn't saved it may ask you do you want to save the changes to document 1? then you say yes.

always keep your documents open till there is no action, on the screen that way you'll be safe knowing everything is saved

then after you have saved the document always check that it is saved, by opening another window and reopen the document

good luck
