He was afraid of being called a false prophet. Because He knew God was a god of mercy, He would not destroy Nineveh, So, if the prophetic destruction did not fulfill, they would belittle him.
It is interesting that Nineveh repented, but it was not long lived. God said He'd destroy them in 40 days--that is prophetic years, because Assyria destroyed them 40 year later.

P.S.: Don't you think many Christians today, like Johan, refuse to testify of their faith. Although they are afraid of being classified as "too religious" or fanatical?

Jonah was being sent to prophesy in Nineva, it was a very bad place, filled with the same kind of folks who revile God on this site, and he didn't want to go there. He was running from his responsibility rather than bring them the truth.

He was running from God when he got into the boat because he didn't want to do whatever God needed him to do. He jumped out of the boat because he was afraid he would be responsible for the deaths of the other people on the boat because it was his fault God was angry.
