This was a campaign started by former First Lady "Lady" Byrd Johnson in the '70s. You see posted signs in areas where supposedly groups and organizations make a commitment to clean that area, yet I still see accumulated trash and litter all the time, even in my own neighborhood. Shouldn't we get back to "Keeping America Beautiful'?

~It went the way of 'A penny saved is a penny earned.' Also, 'Neither a borrower nor a lender be.' And, 'Hard work never killed anyone.'

My group volunteers with Keep Austin Beautiful (a subgroup or offshoot of Keep America Beautiful I think) and we have an area of the street in front of our school that we are supposed to clean four times a year. You wouldn't believe how quickly the trash accumulates. So, those groups may be doing their part, but people just litter so much, that the trash is back before you know it. As far as the trash in your neighborhood goes, KAB probably isn't allowed to go in that area, it's up to the people in the neighborhood. So, get out there and clean up some trash! It's not that hard, and it can make a big difference.

Unfortunately this is not a heavily funded program. While there are still some significant efforts to "keep America beautiful", we will have to take the initiative ourselves. Just do your part - don't litter, use less and recycle more. If you do these things you will be doing your part to keep America beautiful.

I think that this has become a Left-Right issue over the years. Those with huge financial interests have coined the term "tree-huggers"in an effort to justify fouling our own nest.I do not know how much money it would take to bring on the early deaths of my children.I have no conception of that much money.

If there were any truth in "advertising, " underneath the "Kinder, Gentler America" comment...we would have read in small print a disclaimer,"...for the ultra-rich, white friends of the Bush family."
