He doesn't seem to have any interest in feeding himself with a fork/spoon. He only wants to hold the untensils in his hands and them put them down to grab his food. I think he knows what to do with them,, he just finds using his hands to be a much faster way to eat.

Please NO wise a*& remarks, I'm asking because I honestly don't know.

Thanks :)

My 13 month old thinks even yogurt is finger food! My oldest is 5 and still needs to be reminded. The one yr old loads food onto a toddler fork with his hand then removes it from the fork, with his hand, to eat it. My opinion is that the eye-hand-mouth coordination is beyond what most toddlers can do consistently and it would make mealtime frustrating for both of you to expect more than what he is doing. Just give him a round of applause when he does do it so he knows it's a good thing, and give him regular -but not nagging- cheerful suggestions as if eating with a spoon is a fun game. If he can't do it, wait a few months and try again. But I wouldn't really expect anything bordering on good feeding until after toddlerhood- say around 3 ish. Even then, they seem to prefer the path of least resistance-- which is fingers. I like the idea that mealtime is for eating and positive bonding first, and manners can wait a little while.

how old is your child

i would say around 16 months with fork
after he gets the hang of a fork start trying the spoon try one at a time otherwise it get confusing for them they try scooping if it the fork or stabbing with a spoon i know my child got too confused so u just try one till they get the hang of it then the next couple months later try the other
best of luck

and for the hands part just keep putting the utensil in the hand so he cant use his hands eveytime he drops the utensil pick it up put it back in the hand and tell him what its for after while they get the hang of it
dont give up i know it can b frustrating

Hi. First of all, how old is your son?

My 4 year old boy only really began to feed himself with a spoon at around 3 years old.

Before that a spoon was a license to make a mess and play with his food.

Our next challenge, being chinese is to teach him how to use chopsticks!

He will do it when he is ready. My son used to hold his fork in one hand, and pick up food with the other hand and put it on the end of the fork to eat it...talk about forever meal times!! But, I would continue to incourage him to use the fork "like Mommy and Daddy do", or put a piece of meat on the fork for him, then hand it to him--that one works too. Hope that is some help to you?

My son started learning to eat with utensils at 10 months, but he didn't get really good at it until about 15 months. Now, at 26 months, he's awesome!

Starting at about a year, you give him a spoon to eat with. A few months later, you give them a kid-size fork.
My son could eat well with a fork when he was 18 months, but I know people whose children were as old as four before they were good at it.
[ Both my kids could eat with chopsticks by kindergarten - and we're German/Irish! ]

well, you are giving them to him and he is picking them up, i would say make sure he sees you using them, he'll get it, it just takes time, you are on the right track, each child learns at there own pace, i have five children seems like one picked it up early like before one, and 2 at about 2 when they really got it down and Sammy was about 14 months when he got it, Sarah is only 9 months and she just holds on to them, so each child gets it at there own time, just got to wait and see

You didn't say how old your son is currently, but with my cousins I've noticed that around age 2 their motor skills are refined enough for utensils. Before that, utensils just aren't efficient enough for their appetites!
