I started by looking online at Volunteermatch.org. I had difficulty really finding anything close to me that materialized so i walked in to my local United Way office. They had a huge list of all the places to volunteer in my town and even some to add. I just picked one that I loved and have been enjoying it ever since. I think you can call 211 from any landline telephone and that's the direct number to United Way or check them out online.

You can get ahold of a bussiness in your state and help build a house for someone who cant ever get one for her/himselfs family. I know it sounds like a big huge job but this housing project needs help and the more the better they also make the home owner to be help with the building as well so its not like your building it and giving it to just anyone the family has to do allot of work on this house as well. I think its called Housing Hope but it has hope and housing in the Title of the company. Good luck and Thank You for wanting to help the ones who feel like they will never get out of the hard times they are facig I know I was like that at one point in time and I am glad that I got the help I did even when I felt like I never needed it or even wanted it but I got it. Its a hard job and you will feel the pain that others feel once you start your first day in helping others and then you really see how lucky you are. Oh and when your doing this talk to people cause they can tell you the story of there life that will show you how they got where they are now.

I have several suggestions, depending on where your interests lie.
Guardian Ad Litem - Become an advocate for abused children by working with the courts.
Boys and Girls Club - I'm sure you've heard of it. I believe quite a few of these children come from working class families.
Local Literacy Program - Gaining the ability to read can help bring people out of poverty.

I have a website based on a range of different subjects like Animal Cruelty, the Homeless, Child Abuse, and Cancer Awareness. On each topic page, I list many specific links that you can visit to see how you can help in certain situations whether it's volunteering, participating in programs, or even donating. For more information, please visit my website.

Look for an antipoverty group with your church or in your community and join it. Write your congressperson , your senator, letters to the editor about poverty issues.
Give food to the food bank in your area, or even volunteer at a shelter or with the out in the cold program.
Help serve dinners at Thanksgiving, Christmas for those who are needy or low income at shelters.
Encourage your school, family and friends to donate food items or personal hygiene items to your local food bank or women's shelter.

If you give a person things long enough, they will feel entitled to getting it as a gift, and will get indignant when you stop.
If they work for something and earn it, they will feel a sense of accomplishment that nobody can ever give them.
Help a poor person work their way out of their poverty.

You can work at soup kitchens or work with outreach ministries that help the poor.
