Today I found out that I'm gona be kicked out the Navy. About a month and a half ago I had a bad cold. My wife said she had some caugh syrup. I looked at the bottle and it said robotusim and I figured it was the same stuff they sell in the store. But it was perscribed to her. I took it and the next day I had a piss test. I popped on codean and am now getting kicked out for taking caugh syrup. I took the perscription in to the doctor and she said that it was what made me pop on the piss test. Do you think it is right they kick me out for this. I have been in the Navy for 4 1/2 years and have never been in trouble before.

P.S. I know I'm a dumb redneck and cant spell so please dont tell me that.

Heck no I don't think you should be kicked out for that. It was an honest mistake. As long as you have been clean in the past. I think they should give you a break on this one. Go up the chain of command and see what can be done.

Best of Luck!

I havent read any of the others. But my husband has been in the Navy for 12+ years so far and his job actually leans in the direction you are having issues with.
Your first mess up was if it was HER presciption then technically you goofed when you took it. Whether it was just "Cough syrup" or not.
Second that is considered a NARCOTIC and a controled substance in the pharmacy which technically is a criminal charge. I dont think anyone would push that cause it was cough syrup not like she was slipping you her vicodin.
But the thing is if it is not your personal prescription and it has a narcotic in it then yeah your gonna pop on a test and sadly that is the punishment.
You can tell them all day "my wife has this and i accidentally took it" But how often do you really think they hear that stuff.
Even if in your case it is true they have to go on fact not what is a possibilty.
You can appeal going to Captain's Mast but it really comes down to thier judgement and how far your command is willing to push it.
Plus another thing is it seems kinda minor if you took the bottle in so i am wondering it they were "looking for a reason" and possibly we suspecting something since you happen to get a u/a the next day????

Sorry, but this is how things work. If anything it is your wifes fault for giving you a prescription medication for her. You pop on any piss test and you are out. You can fight it until you turn blue and it won't help you. The Navy does not make mistakes on it's drug tests and they didn't this time either. They found illegal drugs in your system and you acknowledged you took them. They don't care how you took them, just the fact that you did gets you kicked out under the zero tolerance rule. I know people in the Navy that got kicked out for drugs 6 weeks and 6 months prior to retirement. Your case is no different. Never take other peoples medications. Sorry, but I worked in security for years and saw cases like yours a lot. No solution, you are going home for sure. I hope your wife has some good job skills to help support your family. You are going to have a rough time of things getting a job with an other than honorable discharge, and RE4 code and zero GI Bill benefits when you get out. I don't even thing you are eligible for unemployment in this case. It does suck if things really happened the way you say. Another thing, if you just reenlisted and got a bonus, you will have to repay the Navy that money.

The FTN comment does not go far in pleading your case assuming you want to stay in. You would think 4 1/2 yrs in Navy would get some of the dumb redneck out of you.Have you been wasting your time. There are plenty of classes and programs to help you improve yourself. However, I do not agree totally with the Navy if what you say is the whole story. Although you are suppose to be an adult and are responsible for what goes into your body. A shot in the dark is to get a civillian lawyer and have your wife testify that she gave it to you not knowing it was wrong.

No surprise you're being kicked out. While it may not seem like a big deal, you took a prescription drug that wasn't prescribed for you. Last I heard, the Navy was Force Shaping, and were actually chaptering people for chapterable offenses. Sorry, but you should have known better. Like the other user said, if FTN means what I think it does, you were a wart that need to be cut off the Navy's *** a long time ago.

Yes, I think the Navy has every right to ensure the safety of our country and your fellow soldiers. As for the red neck that can not spell. As a member of the Armed Forces can you use the resources you are presented with: there is a spell check, use the tools you are given. I do not believe for a second that you mistook a prescription for an over the counter medication. Had you admitted to taking the medication and owned up to your error, my opinion may have been swayed your way. Thats not true the confederate flag behind your picture confirms the dumb redneck id.

Ignore the redneck crap....

Hubby does piss tests for the Army - he said if you're an officer or nco, that yes they can boot you out for 1 failed test.

The other problem is that you knew it was a prescription before you took it. You should never take any meds prescribed to someone else. AND you should have known to look at the ingredients before you took it.

You can try doing a sworn statement about the incident and ask to not be booted out. Tell them you will never again take someone else's meds, and you'll go to sick call instead.

Good luck.....

First, thank you for serving us.
Is there any appeal process? Can you get a Lawyer Involved? A T.V. Station?
If you really want to stay in, try all of these. Heck you could probably get a Lawyer to take your case for free.
What are the Options in the appeal process with the Navy??
God, I saw a lot worse than this.....And no one got the boot...

No, I don't think you should be kicked out. Aren't they considering your history of not being in trouble before? can't you have the doctor write a note saying the cough syrup could cause the failed test?

Whatever happened to captain's mast? Used to be, a first failed piss test was generally handled at captain's mast and ganered the usual 60 days restriction, 60 days extra duty and two months pay plus reduction in rate to the next lowest pay grade.

Is this you first UCMJ violation?

yeap. you do NOT take someone elses' prescription. EVER. you screwed up, made a dumb mistake and now you get to deal with the ramifications of that. the Navy's Zero Tolerance policy is there for a reason.
