My twins are 4 and I feel the same way. But I was thinking today that I'm going to start letting them do it. I will just go behind them for a while until they know not to miss any spots......My son is 8 and I still have to remind him what parts not to miss......

At age 6-7 I think it's wise to leave the bathroom (stand outside and listen--as a safety precaution) and allow the child to wash them self. Then come back in when it's time to use shampoo and help with all that. Finish up with a good rinse and your child will learn how to bathe themself for the most part.

My daughter is 3 and when I run her bath for her, I immediately wash and rinse her hair and soap up her washcloth so I can supervise her washing her body. I do let her play in the tub for about 15 minutes to half an hour by herself while listening to sounds of splashing or singing. I'm sure if you leave your son in there long enough just being in soapy water should get him clean whether he's playing or sitting.

I think this is a thing you have to teach them how to do ever years. My step son is twelve, and only finally taking a bath that actually gets him clean the first time around. Prior to this year, we would have to send him back sometimes twice after the first go! At five, just supervise, and instruct. Good luck!

Babies do not bathe themselves. A toddler can be taught certain things, and a young child can have supervised bathing, they get the idea, but will still miss things. I did not take a shower without my moms help until about 7.

You can start loosening the reigns now. I started letting my son shampoo his hair and soap himself up at 5. I still supervised to make sure he did a thorough job and did not play in the shower. Now he is 7 and I let him take showers independently, with the occasional "You been in long enough" reminder.

he's certainly old enough to do it on his own

my 2 almost 3 yr old bathes her self perfectly fine with a little help (reminding her to wash her hair and opening the bottles)

just keep an eye on him the first couple times to make sure he does everything then just leave him alone from then

btw your son is no longer a baby he is officialy a child

My friend's kid brother brags to all his friends that he remembers my white shirt getting wet (you know the rest) when I baby sat him. He was five.

My two year old started trying to wash himself this week, but I doubt I'll turn over that responsibility to him for a while.

At that age you need to just sit in there with him and instruct him on what parts to do better. This is what I had to do with my little cousins. They eventually get it. And don't forget to make it fun for him. Buy bath dye or crayons for the tub...hope this helps.

By 4 or 5 they should be okay, though you will want to double check and make sure they got clean enough.
