Why on earth would you? its not like they have to pay a booth fee or anything. they said their own price and therefore should know what to expect for pay.

On this question, I would go back to what the tipping is really suposed to be - thanking for a good service. If I was satisified with the service, I would tip.

Another reason is, while she does own the business herself, she is in a service industry where tipping is customary. I would expect her to set the price considering tipping is optional. She is also serving you in her capaicity as a hairdresser, not a manager.

I hope someday you own a business like this and you'll learn...

Do you assume that the owner of a busines is automatically wealthy? The majority make a living and that's about it. They prefer to work for themselves, that's all.

Who pays the rent or mortgage when all the stations aren't rented out? Who pays the electricity? Who buys the light bulbs? Who fixes the broken chairs and pays for the remodeling? Who pays for the plumber to clean out the drains clogged with hair? Who typically opens and closes the store?

Owning a small business is far from easy!

No, she sets her own price and makes what she does from being paid. Tipping is for the purpose of hired employees who are normally low paid and tipping suppliments their pay by offering a good service. Where as the employee doesn't set her own wages the owner though has set her prices to what she already wants for doing the job.

I would. I have never, knowingly, had my hair cut by the owner, but I would tip him or her. I get my nails done by the owner of the nail salon and I always tip her very well.

Depends whether she is charging an honest price, or underpricing to get you in and then looking for a tip. Honest pricing should be the rule, as in Japan where all are paid a reasonable wage and they refuse to take tips.

Wow, this is the first I've heard of this. I almost always have my hair done by the owners of any place I've gone....and I always tip 20%. I thought they charged more for their cut/color because they considered themselves "the best there". No wonder they love me.

No. You never tip the business owner. They're familiar with this rule too.
**************************************************************
To the one person who disagrees with all the "no" answers:
The store owner keeps ALL of what you pay them. Mine charges me 65 dollars for a hair trim and he keeps ALL of that... no "chair rights", "no salary"... ALL profit.
It's an international rule to not tip the owner, because they're NOT supplementing hourly wages or a small cut of the price of the cut. They get it all.
ps, my sister actually had he rtip returned to her in NYC once, because the person who'd cut her hair was the owner!! He was Italian and when he was tipped, he smiled to her and said: "don't worry about a tip, I own this place". Classy....

I would because she's working by herself and works hard for the money. I mean, you don't HAVE to but it would be nice.
