You wake up with that bad taste in your mouth aka as morning breath because you are most likely what the dental profession calls a "mouth breather".
The bacterial colonies in your mouth develop rapidly while you sleep because there isn't any activity (talking, chewing, swallowing is usually diminished, ect.) happening in your mouth at night.
Saliva continuely develps and most people don't swallow while asleep. That saliva has bacteria in it that is colinizing.

Tasting metal in the mouth can be a sign of a number of different things including oral infection like gingivitis or periodontitis or a tooth infection. It can also be caused by some medications like certain antibiotics, antidepresants, and some drugs that are used to treat bloodpressure, arthritis and kidney stones. As well as possibly being caused by prenatal vitamins that some women like to take when trying to get pregnant (hence the taste in early pregnancy that one or two other people have mentioned). You'll need to look at if you're taking any of the above, and if so maybe try talking to your doctor, if not then it might be worth a trip to the dentist even if you don't feel like you have an infection. Some infections in the gums particularly you don't get any pain in the early stages. Good luck finding the cause!

Its because bacteria that is naturally in your mouth is able to multiply for hours on end because the ph in your mouth is off while you sleep because your Sylvia is down while your mouth is not in motion especially if you sleep breathing through your mouth. Your Sylvia is key to a healthy and pleasant smelling mouth along with good dental hygiene. Some of the bacteria in your mouth are the same that are found in rotten flesh but since the little wanks have hours to party and multiply while you sleep you then wake up with their sweet...not so sweet waste stinking up your mouth. Drink plenty of water always and chew gum after you eat anything. If its a terrible problem wake up every few hours and drink some water, it should help that ph.

HELLO PRINCESS,
BAD MORNING BREATH IS A COMMON PROBLEM. THERE ARE CONSTANT BACTERIA GROWING AND EMITTING VOLATILE SULFUR COMPOUNDS CAUSING HALITOSIS.
THERE ARE DENTAL PRODUCTS WHICH CAN BE PLACED ON THE TONGUE AT NIGHT AFTER BRUSHING WHICH HELP TO CUT DOWN ON MORNING BREATH REMARKABLY WELL.
