43 drivers per race
top 35 drivers make it every race..the rest have to race their way in ~ Qualify.
races start 1 to 43 depending on how fast they qualify.
qualifying is 2 laps around the track...fastest gets the pole and so on.
Here are some drivers:
2-Kurt Busch
3-Dale Earnhardt Sr (deceased)
4-Ward Burton
5-Kyle Busch (he sucks!)
6-David Ragan - rookie
7-Robby Gordon
8-Dale Earnhardt Jr (most popular)
9-Kasey Kane
10-Scott Riggs
11- Denny Hamlin
12- Ryan Newman
13-Joe Nemechek
14-Sterling Marlin
15-Paul Menard
16-Greg Biffle
17-Matt Kenseth
18-JJ Yeley
19-Elliott Sadler
20-Tony Stewart (very popular)
21-Kenny Schrader
22-Dave Blaney
24-Jeff Gordon (also very popular)
25-Casey Mears
29-Kevin Harvick (my favorite!)
31-Jeff Burton
38-David Gilliland (M&M's car)
40-David Stremme
41-Reed Sorenson
42-Juan Pablo Montoya (came fr:F1)
43-Bobby LaBonte
44-Dale Jarrett (new toyota team-UPS)
45-Kyle Petty (dad is "the King")
48-Jimmy Johnson (hate this guy!)
55-Michael Waltrip (DW's little brother)
88-Ricky Rudd
99-Carl Edwards (does backflips when he wins)
07-Clint Bowyer
They race mostly ovals ~ 1/2 to 2 1/2 miles long. All laps count unless they wave a red flag...they only do this for really bad cautions. Yellow flag means caution...if there's a crash or debris on the track. Green means go...white means one lap to go...checkered means the race is over.

hope that helps ya.

There are several books out about NASCAR.
I have one called "NASCAR for dumbies".This is a good informativebook for the beginer.
But a Quick nutshell version is;
The National Association for Stock Car Automobile Racing started in 1949 when Bill France organized bootleggers and their souped upcars and some young men fresh from the military looking for adventures with their hotrods. The first year had about 6 or 7 racers.
From those beginings NASCAR progressed thru the 50's and 60's with true stock cars from the auto manufacturers.
In the 70's cars were scaled back in size and more partsof the cars were stamper out of sheet metal by the teams up until today where the cars are made wholey by the team.
Points are tallied up thru out the year and the top 12 drivers are picked for the chase to determine the champion..
A race has 43 drivers with positions set by quailifing. There are 36 cars/drivers that will make the field by speed the rest are chosen by provisionals.
Most races are either 400 or 500 miles in length.
so a quick tour is over.

Nascar started along time ago and has came along way. Dale Earnhardt Dr was almost the best. They used to race on dirt tracks and had small grand stands and didn't use to have garage area open to fans before the races. These days they have the military fly over every race just before the drivers start there cars. The National Anthem is also song before the start of the race. Nascar is also starting to eliminate bed fans. They are also trying to improve driver saftety. Now they have paved surfaces, safer barriers and the new COT car (Car of Tomorrow). The COT car pushes the drivers more to the middle of the car and give them more head room. Now Nascar has 12 contenders for the cup and not 10. The drivers now get 5 points for leading each lap and when the Chase For The Cup starts the driver gets those points. Nascar is a darn good sport and have fun learning about it.

Do some research on the net. There is way too many components of Nascar to talk about here. I would say one of the most important thing to learn is the drivers and their numbers. I'll name just a few things you'll need to learn:

-what being tight and loose means
-lucky dog
-what some of the simple pentlies are (ie. what happens when ur caught speeding on pit road, passing below the yellow line, missing a lug nut.....there's more)
-what happy hour means
-what's the difference between, super speedways, short tracks, road races
-pit stratgey

There's a ton more to learn. You also might wanna check into some of the drivers and who their rival is. Good luck!!!!

Goodness that's a short question for a very long answer.

I'll try my best to break it down,
The drivers are racing for two things, #1 to win the race and #2 also to gain points.
for example if you lead a lap you get 5pts
at the end of the season whoever has the most points, (not the most wins) wins the over all championship.

man I know this doesn't help you sweetie, but it's just that there's way too much involved to explain. Trust me watch a few races and you'll start to get the hang of it. Bashers love to come on and say it's just a bunch of cars going round and round making left turns, but it's just because they lack the intelligence to understand a truely great sport!

GOOD LUCK!

There is alot to explain and you will never get the complete picture here. I had to watch a few races to understand what was going on; and thankfully the Commentators covering the races do a very good job of explaining what is going on.

NASCAR.com has a library that explains some things the address is:

http://www.nascar.com/kyn/101/video

There are some videos there to explain some of the mechanics of NASCAR

Welcome to the NASCAR Nation and I hope you have a great time with it.

Gene L, Danielle:) Shortnstoudt, Crystal, and PapaBill all gave you excellent places to go, and great advice of what to learn about if your wanting to learn more.

I would also say watch a race, and listen for Darrell Waltrip, he explains a lot. The best commentator we currently have in the sport for giving you history and explaining the race as it goes.

Also, Nascar.com and Jayski.com are great online site to learn more.

Also Nascar raceday on the Speed channel is a great place to learn more. Good luck and I hope you really enjoy it as I have.

NASCAR= fast cars, fast drivers, rules made by nascar that have a tendency to change as they go along, several laps, left turns (unless road courses), crashes happen,Gordon gets booed a lot...pick a driver and enjoy....
