How can someone go deer hunting and kill one, considering that the following expenses far outway the value of providing food for your family:
Purchase of gun(s),
license,
equipment,
hunting lease,
gasoline,
and lodging.

That commandment has to do with Murder, Murder of people, not animals for food.

I have a cousin who lives in Wisconsin who has spent a fortune on guns and hunting equipment and has never bagged a deer.

His 16 year old daughter on the other hand, bagged a deer the first time she went hunting with her Daddy as a 16 year old girl. I suppose he would have gone hunting with his son but God decided only to give him girls.

Since then I've consoled Ray by telling him, "Any idiot can shoot a deer, but it takes an expert to teach his daughter."

The commandment not to kill is regarding human beings and in fact is a commandment not to murder. There are sanctioned times when municipalities and law enforcement should take the life of a criminal. The criminal who has committed murder, for instance; the criminal has forfeited the right to life by taking the life of another.

Killing animals is not prohibited by the sixth commandment. This world was created as the habitation of mankind. All other things are here for us and we have the privilege and weighty responsibility to govern it wisely. Animals are intended for several things, one of which is food. Also, God commanded sacrifices of animals at times.

The main reason why killing humans (when it is deemed just in response to a greivous crime) is right when God says it is because, for God, it is not murder. Why? Have you ever thought about the reason why it is wrong to murder someone? It sounds like a dumb obvious question, but the answer is, We cannot give that life back. We've taken the sacred life of an innocent person that we cannot return. But here's the difference. When God commands us to carry out justice by taking a life, it's not murder, because He has the power to return it. It's His to give or take.

It's not the way it use to be.
My cousin still hunts for sustenance. He prepares and cures all his own game.
I quit hunting because the deer meat was costing $150 per pond.
Moose, well that is worth it as long as they are in your backyard.

Probably the same way they go golfing. Recreation.

I'm not keen on hunting, but I don't think hunting is a 6th commandment issue.

My sentiments exactly. Some Orthodox prayer books, when providing a self-examination in the light of the commandments, make the same point (in slightly more eloquent language).

i have never really understood hunting as sport, but i don't think that "thou shall not kill" includes animals.

in response to another answer - i don't think that jesus ever intended to only preach/teach to just hebrews. isn't the whole reason he came to include everyone? at least that was always the way i understood it.

It was _blatantly_ clear in Jesus' time that it meant not to kill a fellow Jew. Firstly, it is important to note the word "fellow" since Jesus originally meant his religion to be for Jews only and not "Gentiles". Someone said that if Jesus hadn't risen, then he would surely turn over in his grave if he saw that Peter and Paul had taken the religion to the un-Jewish masses.

"Thou shalt not kill more than is necessary for thy physical sustenance". To me, that says it all. (and it never applies to humans. I believe that's never justified)
