The idea is that we see how our soldiers are being put like bait in these hostile cities. If they could be deployed to guard the Iraq borders with Syria and Iran maybe the insurgency could be held back or stopped. Let the Iraqui army clean up the mess in this cities. Have Iraq deploy its army inside the city while establishing another part of its army as a perimeter around and outside these cities. This could hold the infitration of the insurgency and keep our soldiers out harmsway. The concept would be a close guard on these borders which means less exposure for our soldiers. The Iraqui army would establish close perimeters before entering these cities meaning filtering any insurgency while another part of the army would clean up the cities for insurgents while establishing law and order.

That should have been done on day 1 of the invasion, secure the borders then go after Saddam, and it would have worked.

We have a huge logistical problem in Iraq as it is. Many of the deaths we have incurred were in road convoys of supplies. By moving to the parameter of the country we would spread out our forces even more. This would not only overburden an already stressed logistical chain but would make command and control more difficult.

Well since the iraqi army is incapable of holding a position without the entire US Army behind them the militias would overun their positions as they have done everytime that we have tried that. Plus we don't have enough forces to completely cover the border.

We couldn't close the borders during Vietnam. We can't close the US/Mexico border. Maybe we could learn how to do it in Iraq. But, I doubt it.

Besides burdening the logistical operation there it won't give enough protection to those rebuilding the damaged infrastructure to complete their work.

The US has a pretty poor track record when it comes to patroling borders.
