I hear you! My sincere belief is that this country would be a better place if everyone had mandatory service in the military and in the service industry. My ex-girlfriend was against tipping saying that, "That's their choice of proffesion, not my fault." She came from a wealthy familiy, and she pissed them off and her allowance was reduced. I convinced her to waitress part time at a place where I was bartender. She hardly got tipped at all for the first two weeks. I told her it was Karma coming back at her. She gets it now, and makes sure that when she's out with her snooty friends that they tip well.
In a way, I have made the world a better place for service workers everywhere. :)

I think the question is does everyone know that most restaurant servers make $2.13 and hour...?
I tend to tip about 10% on to go orders. Maybe a little more if it seems worth it. I've had the privilege of being a waitress for about 5 years total, and it's very hard work, in pretty awful conditions at times, with generally no affordable health insurance, decently paid vacations or job security. Some shifts I made $25 an hour, some I made $7. I really resented the people who didn't tip, some of whom might think I had it "so easy" because sometimes I made that big hourly rate. If they think servers are so lucky, they should feel free to make it their career for a year and see how much it's like winning the lottery.
Personally, if I had a restaurant, I would add an 18% gratuity on EVERY check, and say so up front. No tipping, just the service charge. Very European, server compensation built in. And very fair.

"If you did'nt I just wanted you to stop and realize that if the restaurants paid us a living wage and not the pittance that we get per hour ( $ 2.13 ) then that $ 10.00 burger would be $ 15.00. Bartenders tend to get between $2.13 - $3.13 and hour."
Firstly, what country do you work in? I live in the USA. In the lowliest of resturaunts I've worked in, minimum wage for waitstaff is 3.15 because thats the Federal Minimum Wage. As a bartender, I never EVER made less than 5.00(that was even when minimum wage was 4.25)
Now, when it comes to tips for those who make less than the minimum standard set by the Federal Government(note that businesses can be heavily fined for paying below this if they are caught), I typically leave between 15 and 20%. Even if my order is less than 8.00, I still leave at least a dollar in that case. I don't tip for take out unless its an order of 3 or more meals. Having worked in resturaunts most of my life(I'm 30 btw), I know there are extremes. I've seen waitresses take home a day about 10-20 dollars an hour on good days, and not meet minimum wage requirements on bad days. Odds have, according to most former coworkers, it normaly evens out to around 6-7.

Most people don't know which is sad. It's hard work being a server and you don't get the most respect! I always tip a min. of 20% and if they're fantastic 30% if I can. I agree with you about karma! Good luck and hopefully some people will wake up and see that there aren't any more 10% or 15% tips. I was once tipped by a bunch of young guys a condom and a couple of ciggarettes. It's a cruel tough world.

Okay, let's say the waitress makes $2.13 per hour wage. Say, she can wait 4 tables per hour?? If ony 2 people per table, say a $40.00 bill. A 20% tip would be $8.00 per table. That would be $32.00 per hour in tips plus the $2.13 which equals $34.13 per hour. What if there were 4 people at each table? Who all here who is not a waitress makes over $34.13 per hour? Obviously, the amounts will vary, but I think there is more room on the upside of my examples then on the downside. I think I'm in the wrong profession and wasted all my college money!!

I always tip and tip well for good service, but to be honest, I didn't know that tipping was allowed at the to-go. I thought it was sort of like a drive thru, I didn't realize that the servers had to prepare it and all. I'll make sure I break them off a little something next time too.
Thanks for the lesson in to-go etiquette!

I usually tip well except for when I get bad service. A tip is earned not expected. When the waitress acts like she is bothered to help us, makes us wait a long time for everything and then slams the food and drinks down on the table, then she didnt deserve a 15% tip and it wasnt given (bad dining experience over the weekend LOL) . However, I have no problem tipping 20-25% for excellent service.

I like the Japanese system where they are paid a decent wage and there is NO tipping. Too bad America has not become civilized yet. I don't like tipping because I am never sure whether I am undertipping or overtipping. It makes it an unpleasant experience. Hurrah for Japan.

The minimum wage in California is what...7.50? If you are making below minimum wage, you should not be working there...period. There are tons of people working for minimum wage who work just as hard and get NO TIPS (walmart, target, etc.) I know food service is an expensive business to be in. I can't afford to eat out as often as I'd like because the price of food (even at the usual Chili's applebee's etc.) are going so high and then being obligated to leave tips? No thanks, I'll just eating at home.
I only tip when the services is very good...and even then I only tip 15% MAX. I have a friend who regardless of what the services is like leaves a huge tip. When I go out with her, I don't leave a tip at all to balance it out.

I've actually asked people before whether they know that waiters/waitresses make below regular minimum wage and most people are unaware of that fact.
That's why people don't leave good tips or any at all.
For me, as long as the server is nice, cordial, and does his/her job they get a good tip. If they are outstanding, they get a great tip.
