They are different for different people. Some people use them as a status thing, others do them for personal reasons. Sometimes it's to rebel, sometimes to fit in.

Personally, I got my tattoo and tongue piercing because I (1) like the way they look and (2) have a slight pain fetish. My tattoo is somewhere that can be easily hidden and many people don't notice my tongue piercing even after knowing me for months so mine aren't really about showing off or standing apart from everyone else - though some people get them for that reason.

It's really a very personal thing that is different for everybody.

I think it's different for each person. Some it might be the style, fashion, colors etc of the tattoo and to others it could symbolize a point or time in their life. Like for me, each of my tatts symbolize certain times in my life. As for the piercings, I believe it's the same thing. I just love the body jewelry and the way it looks, the way it makes me feel and so on.

I don't think piercings symbolize anything. Some tattoos have special meanings to the person who has them and some are just tattoos that the person liked.

What a body mod symbolizes to an individual varies from person to person.

My tattoo symbolized a celebration of my daughter. My tattoo was placed where her head was when I was pregnant...

I don't think that there is a "normal" in terms of meaning of a tattoo...some like it simply because they love tattoos and some get them because it has personal meaning...

Personally, I would think it's just artistic expression. I don't think it has to mean anything. People getting piercings and tattoos for different reasons.
I have a friend who got a tattoo for a reason I think is really sweet. He wanted to forever have his son with him...he got a tattoo of his sons name and birthday on his arm and plans on getting his girlfriends name next.
If you're in a relationship (Dom/sub relationship) perhaps you get it to please your Top... As a sign of devotion and loyalty to them.

Or perhaps you just enjoy the feeling or the look. Body art, whatever form it is, is a form of expression, like writing or music... it's away of expressing yourself in a way that makes you stand out as an individual and is done because that person wants to get it done, not because of pressure but because to them, it's beautiful.

What ever you want them to. There is no set rule as to what it can mean, i have all seahorses tattooed on my honouring my father, but 2 of my tatts are for my kids as well, and another is in honour of the day my hubby proposed, he picked it out, took me in, and as i was getting this lovely tattoo done on me in a style i loved and of course of a seahorse, he proposed, i couldnt say no. All of my piercings seem to come from me realising i am happy with my body the way it is(am currently preggers with 3rd child) and having the confidence to do something i like to it, icing on the cake.
