Asking someone who you haven't seen in a few years how their mother is (their mother had cancer). Do you say something like "is she cancer free now?" or does that come across as rude.

Anything you say that is heartfelt and sincere should be appreciated. Try: how is your Mom's health now?

I would start with "how have you been?" You might find out with that question. If not, you can judge whether it feel safe to probe a bit more deeply. If it does, you could ask "how's you mother doing?" with a concerned look. If she has, in fact, deteriorated or passed away, it won't be insensitive to have asked. Just make sure you respond sensitively, "I'm so sorry," or something like that. Whatever you do, don't get so wrapped up in what you're saying that you forget the whole point is to be sensitive to your friend.

Just say that you have been thinking about her mother and was wondering how she was doing? By asking about someone that does not come across as rude . It only shows that you are a sweet and caring person.

I don't think it's rude, you're just asking. People do that all the time! Be nice, "And how's your mother?" If they answer that she passed from the cancer, simply offer your condolences, "Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that! Is there anything I can do?" You know, it's not a big deal, just be yourself!

You could simply ask your friend how her mother is. You can ask how her battle with cancer was going. I'm sure it wont come across as rude.

It's good that you want to do this. So many people don't know what to say about a serious illness or even death... and so don't say anything at all.
People don't want you to tiptoe around the subject. Just ask directly "How is your Mom doing?" ...and be prepared for a difficult answer.
