Our councils seem to be full on supplying road blocks to stop our flow and decisions as to stop or giveway so if we have free will and used our feelings and knowing..with out being told when to stop or giveway without lights or signs ....there fore it would save a heck of a lot of monies and we would then be paying less rates..I am in the vicinity of Canada Bay and they are putting more humps and bumps , even just islands at the side of the road stops the flow ...of a once two lane traffic ...so what is the answer, also cutting down trees unnecessarily...this is our enviroment and it is an expression of us also ...thank you

Well, where I live the person with the largest vehicle always goes first, pretty simple traffic law.

I am going to stick my head above the parapet on this, but here goes anyway. Many roundabouts when they are first built work perfectly well, but they need reasonably balanced flows on each approach so that the 'give way to the right' rule works. Over the years flows change for various reasons and one or two approaches monopolise the flows to the detriment of the others. Then the complaints come in, sometimes thick and fast. Some of the bigger ones usually at motorway exits allow traffc to travel round at high speeds and drivers wanting to enter take risks. There is one on my patch which had over 100 injury accidents per year until lights were put in. Now there are very few accidents, but a lot of disgruntled motorists! If we had a magic wand to improve matters we would because it would be far cheaper than lights. In fact lights are regarded as a last resort in many cases because they do invariably cause delays. The reason why you are met with a red light in the small hours is because it is generally thought to be more safe for a driver to meet a red on any approach, therefore when there is no demand all lights revert to red. Regarding switching the lights off at night, yes they could be and I cannot think of a valid reason for not doing so at the moment, so I will concede on that. And yes, they do seem to run better with the lights off. That may be sod's law but is more likely due to changing traffic patterns since the lights went in. I once suspended the lights at a roundabout at a busy junction as an experiment and outside peak periods the traffic flowed reasonably well. But the fire service were experiencing 3-4 minute delays. When the lights were working they had a switch which gave them a 'green wave' through all the junctions on their main routes ot of town. This stopped all side road traffic until the machines had passed. To the fire service 3-4 seconds may be the difference between life and death so the lights are back on.

go to some asian countries. like Pakistan, INDIA, etc and rent a car and even they have traffic lights and all this kind of stuff still at the end of the day you will get your answer and would know more than all of us.

well, if no one has the right of way I will always have the right of way... if your truck is not bigger than mine you cant go infront of me... does that sound fair? or safe? the problems are the people not the roads... or signals.
