I read somewhere that you should tip your hairdresser, esthetician, massage therapist, etc. if they are renting out a space in a salon or office, but if the owner of the salon is performing the service, you do not need to tip. Is this correct? What is proper etiquette in this situation?

I think that as long as they do a good job, you should tip an owner the way you would anyone else. A tip is usually an indication that a customer is satisfied with the service they received. It makes a person feel good to receive that recognition , no matter who they are.

I own a salon now, but even when I was an employee of a salon, I was asked this question by a client because she had just gotten her hair cut by my boss, who was the owner. I told her that it was up to her whether or not she decided to tip him, but there was no real etiquette about it.
The truth is, you are tipping someone in the personal service industry for their performance and care, not to supplement
their minimum hourly wage, as in the restaurant business...the tip reflects your appreciation for the service performed, above and beyond the base price of the service.
Another reason people don't think they should tip the owner/stylist is because it is widely believed that they take a cut of the other stylists income, so it is not necessary to give them more money on top of that.True, most stylists earn a commission or rent a space, but the business is the consumer of that income, NOT the owner, take my word for it!
Ultimately, it is your decision if you feel comfortable tipping the owner for the service performed; you will not offend them if you do, and I'm sure they'd understand if you don't. All I can say is that I always appreciate it when my clients have tipped me...as an artist, it makes me feel good that they walked away happy and wanted me to know through a gratuity...and of course, a big grin on their face!

Generally, the proper etiquette is not to tip the owner of a salon for services rendered if they rent stations to other service providers. The reasoning behind this is that the owner is already getting a renatl fee from each other provider and sometimes a percentage of the work they bring into the salon. However, if the owner works alone and does not rent out stations in the salon, then it is proper to tip them.
At the salon I go to the owner rents out over a dozen stations and I do not tip him when he trims my hair or combs out/styles my hair, but I usually tip him when he cuts my hair into a new style because I am reminded of his genius and why I pay $200 for a cut. Even if I do not tip him when he cuts my hair (which would be proper etiquette) he is gracious and consistently provides excellent service.

You are not "supposed" to tip anybody at all. There is a set price for any service or job. If a tip was required, the price would be higher. It's just the classy thing to do in some cases (restaurant, etc.)

Salons usually have their prices so you won't want to tip them anyway. Get my drift?

No. Generally you are not suppose to have to tip the owner if they are doing work on you. They usually have their prices set higher though so the tip is included in the price.
I suppose the proper etiquette would be to offer a tip, and in higher class salons, the owner will refuse it and tell you it's not necessary.

I own a custom frame shop. I agree with the reader who says she is her sole supporter. So am I. However, even tho I come in early, stay late or make special arrangements for my customers, it would never occur to them to tip me.
I don't feel it is necessary to tip the owner of a shop as they have their prices set to make a living. If they don't, they are very good business men. My prices are set to make a living. I never get a tip and believe me a good business person goes beyond what is necessary on a regular basis to satisfy a customer. When my customers start to tip me, I'll think of tipping the owner of my salon.

I'm not sure what's proper, however, I do not tip the owner when she does my hair. If I have a couple of bucks extra and she worked me in or something extra special. But for just my regular appt. No I don't tip her.
