"Wait" is an answer. So is "no". Sometimes the answer comes in a different form than what you think it should. If you consider only "yes" answers to be answers, and giving you what it is that you think you want, when there might be a better option available if you look for it, then it's no wonder if you think your prayers aren't answered.
7"Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
9"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
What is a "good gift"? If your 6 year old child asks for a gun, do you give him a gun? If you seek an answer, and it comes in a different form than the one you thought you wanted, did you not find an answer then? If you knock, and the door is opened, there is no guarantee of what is actually waiting on the other side, only that it will open to you. Is winning the lottery a "good gift"? Maybe for some, but there are quite a few who would rather not, if they had to do it over again. If you asked to win the lottery, and didn't, did you ask for a fish, and get a snake instead, or did you ask for a snake, and get told to go fishing?
Is this verse even talking about physical gifts, such as riches, or spiritual gifts? When I was growing up sitting in a Catholic church every Sunday, sounded like spiritual gifts to me, not physical.....

Prayers are answered according to His will. When you pray for His will to be done, not being selfish, He answers according to what is best, even if it is to allow you to learn from what you ask. Everyone else answers the same way, yes, no or wait. With the Lord, the best part is His answers Is always right.

I'm a cat person, not a dog person, so I think the analogy works even better.
Cats don't care about you, but they expect you to cater to them at every moment of your life. They never seem to sleep. In order to be a good cat owner, you have to set aside time for your cat. You have to constantly tell yourself that your cat is worth it. You have to buy products intended to please your cat.
Your cat is proud and quiet. You can ask your cat anything, and you won't get an answer. Still, if you're a fanatical enough cat owner, you might convince yourself that your cat is talking back to you. Eventually, you become a full-on loony.
Obviously, my cat is God. My cat seems to agree.
At least dogs will answer you when you ask them things. They generally ignore your question and answer with a generic, platitudinal "bark," and then they lick your face, but they at least give an answer, nonsensical though it may be. Dogs, then, are closer to Zen than the Christian God. Their answers are not ultimately meaningful, but many people convince themselves that they are.

Well for one thing GOD does answer yes no wait. It answered what is best for us even if we dont think so. I dont think selfish prayer is answered because that is not the point of prayer.Sincere prayer is answer in his tme not ours and if it is a reasonalble thing but we often dont think its answered then some thing will happen and its like gees it is answered but not exactly like i thought. We are humans and we tend to some times ask for things that are not really good for us or necessary.

look at Paul- he prayed 3 times for the thorn in his flesh to be removed- God said NO.
Abraham was told that He would bear a son and be the Father of many nations- but God said WAIT- 25 years to be exact.
People came to Jesus and He answered instantly too.
These are just one example of each.

What's the matter? God ignored your prayers? Well in that case you can always pray to your dog.
Or use your intellect. Religion is not for material gain, in case you had forgotten.

I love the "I prayed for X but God showed me I didn't need it."
Oh yeah? That's great. WHY BOTHER, THEN?
Prayers have no effect on eternal reality.
