to lose weight - cardio 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat) and combine it with light weight training so you wouldnt lose muscle.

here's an interesting thing: the Mayo clinic did a study showing that the most effective way to boost your metabolism is to move around more during the day.

here's a quote:

"Wiggle, walk, tap your toes, shop, dance, clean your basement, play the guitar to boost your NEAT -- or if you're a scientist, your "non-exercise activity thermogenesis." Mayo Clinic researchers report in today's issue of the journal Science that NEAT -- more powerful than formal exercise -- determines who is lean, and who is obese. Obese persons sit, on average, 150 minutes more each day than their naturally lean counterparts. This means obese people burn 350 fewer calories a day than do lean people."

Usually depending on how much you weigh and how much you can endure it could be from 10 and 20 minutes to one whole hour. Once the hour gets easier you need to go longer so you can lose more weight.

You should do at least a half hour of cardio a day and a half hour of weight training 3 times a week. At least that's what my personal trainer told me.

One thing for sure is you should never by those machines. Just exercises at least 1hr.
