My son is home from his first school in the Airforce. We are in SC and his first duty station is in Montanta. He has to pay for his travel there, where he will be reimbursed by the Airforce.

We have been looking on-line for inexpensive airline tickets, but are unable to find any below $597.44 one way.

Does anyone know anything about flights for the military, or a site to find "cheap" tickets at the last minute?

A lot of these answers were great suggestions, I would say 1. Have him call the transportation office at his follow on duty station and aske them about rembursement, just to be sure. I dont want to say yes he will definitly get reimbursed, but from my experiences he normally will. Travelocity is always an awesome site for last minute tickets. I live in SC (Charleston) as well and have found numerous cheap tickets. Your son could always come to a base in SC ( Fort Jackson, Charleston NWS, or Charleston AFB) to the ticket office and have them assist him with finding a ticket.
2.) he could take a greyhound, but that is an awfully long trip from SC and he would really be wasting a lot of days of his leave. 3.) another good suggestion would be is to call each of the airlines that fly out of the airport that he will be departing from and ask them about a military discount, they often will give you a very decent price and you will be expected to purchase the ticket within 24 hours. ( alot of the time a round trip will be cheaper then just a one way). ** Tell him to be sure to keep ALL of his reciepts from his travel ( food, airline ticket, cab ride to base) as he will need this while he in processes into his unit ( this is when he will usually fill out the paperwork to be reimbursed for his travel expenses) Hope this helps you !!!!!! If you have any questions I would be more then happy to help you out or at least help you find out where you can get that information.
Feel free to email me.

The military has two travel offices for all branches but the largest one is carlson wagonlet. He will need a copy of his assignment order for them to secure the flight at the discounted cost. If he does not have them he could try contacting his last duty assignment to obtain another copy.

I recommend you contact the Airline Ticket Office at the nearest military base/post to you.

Their services provide the cheapest way you will find.

He won't be re-imbursed as he opted to take leave and come home rather than to go to his first duty station. I am sure he was told this before he left. Try looking for a round trip, they are normally less expensive than a one way.

That's not correct. The military pays for travel from one duty station to another. He received travel pay to go to his next duty assignment.
