I was shocked to discover that all major pizza places charge a delivery fee (over $2 dollars) without making the customer aware of the fee. I was tipping on top of the delivery fee. After I discovered this, I stopped tipping above the fee. I had a delivery person get upset with me because I would not tip above the delivery fee.

First, I am a private school middle school teacher and I wish I made millions of dollars, but I dont. With gas over $3 dollars, and the cost of living so high, where does it end?

Thank you for your replies, but some of you have to be kidding. They deserve a reward for delivering my pizza??? For driving??? Something you can do as young as 16??? If they are so unhappy, why dont they go back to school and do something about it? I think if they charge a delivery fee that should offset the tip! When you go to a restaurant and the tip is included to the cost of the meal, do you still tip above that? I dont.

Last for the Dominos lady... how can you claim that your company started the fee for the drivers when the MAJORITY of the replies (by drivers even) state that the company keeps the fee for themselves and that the money does not go to the driver. Why dont you suck it up and stop scamming your employees. Your response sound hypocritical.

Thanks again :)

I don't tip for pizza delivery. That delivery fee is what I normally tip, but like you after I saw there was that fee, I stopped tipping. With me, tipping at a sitdown place isn't a guarantee. If they are assholes, I don't tip.

No - it's not the same as the tip. For large chains like Papa John's - the delivery fee goes to the company, not the driver. Tips, on the other hand -go directly to the driver. Some independent pizza places do give their drivers a portion of the delivery fee for each pizza they deliver on top of their hourly wage...but chain places only pay an hourly wage. So you tip on top of the delivery fee. I usually tip $1-2 per item ($1 per pizza or chicken wing order, or whatever) delivered and usually no less than $5. Percentage tips do not apply to pizza delivery. Also- remember you are tipping a delivery person, not a server who has to deal with you for your entire meal and clean up afterwards.

Pizza franchises have adopted the "delivery fee" as a way to offset costs. You may have noticed that the stated price of a pizza has remained pretty much static over the last two decades. This is no accident. Companies fear that if they increase the cost they will lose business, but if they all impose a "delivery fee" and the customer assumes that this is some sort of tip for the driver, well that s no skin off their noses. Don t stiff the driver because you think the pizza company is stiffing you. Drivers earn a "tipping wage", in Florida about $5/hr. They depend on tips to make up the balance. If you want to be a dick, own it, but understand that the driver gets none of that extra charge.

Delivery Charge

Jet's charges $2.50 delivery fee- They don't give that to the driver? Then I have to pay a minimum of $3 on a $12 pizza -as a tip..... That extra $5.50 is more than enough to get a really good pizza at another pizzeria.....so I will just drive the 1.5 miles (in beautiful weather) and pick it up myself......or I will invest the full money into a really good pizza. Pizza delivery is no longer worth it.

When I order pizza and ask the price, they always include the delivery fee, but maybe they don't where you live, I don't know. But yes, a tip is expected on top of that. That's why I often pick my orders up, or else I just make my own darn pizza! If you don't tip tho, and order from there again, they are very likely to remember you and I think it's safe to say there's a possibility your food may have an extra ingredient or two that you didn't ask for or be otherwise "mistreated" before you get it. Use your imagination - you can bet they will. If you don't think it happens, talk to someone in that type of food industry. I did.

If I do order out, I always tip, unless there was a screw up with the order or they were pretty late or something because then they know that's the reason why.

Legally in states such as California, pizza places have to pay their employees minimum wage, cover gas costs, and a flat rate per order delivered. Some places are now screwing their employees by calling drivers "independent contractors" which allows them to not pay minimum wage or cover gas costs. I work at papa johns and get paid $3 per order delivered. I can do about 3 to 4 deliveries per hour on average with a steady flow of orders placed. Without tips and after paying for gas, I only make a couple bucks per hour. If you don't tip, you're wasting the drivers time. To make minimum wage, the driver needs to make a $3 tip per order on average. And no, the driver doesn't get that delivery fee

Yes, as a delivery guy for Domino's I know this. That $2 doesn't even go to the store you are purchasing from. That goes towards franchising fees for having drivers on the road. To set the record straight, the store is not responsible for drivers getting into accidents. That will be settled between the drivers' insurance companies. However, all stores must have liability insurance, and those fees go up if any business wanting coverage has any form of delivery service. Wear n Tear/gas reimbursement is on a by store basis. It is not required to reimburse drivers. There are also franchise fees and corporate expenses for taking part in and maintaining the online ordering systems. Which is the major reason for recent delivery cost spikes.

Although I'm not sure it ends anywhere, you are still expected to tip the driver. Most drivers earn 45 to 80 cents per delivery from the pizza joint, and that's intended as part of their wage to cover gas, car maintenance, etc. The pizza joints use the delivery fee to help cover the wages they pay, but drivers don't see much of it, and still usually make minimum wage (or close to it). Depending on the amount of pizza ordered, I usually tip 3-4 dollars to the driver, if I get my pizza on time.

Pizza places really only deliver in a 3-5 mile radius of the store so I never understand after paying 2.50 at Pizza Hut for a delivery charge why should I have to tip as well.. is gas is 3.50 a gallon and your car gets 25-35 mpg I guess i should really just tip like 15 cents since I'm only a mile from the store. If the driver want a tip here it is, get a job anywhere else for minimum wage, you choose to deliver pizzas so it's my choice weather or not I tip after paying 2.50 already. 2.50 on a 15 dollar order is already overpriced.
