The best psychiatrists for treating ADHD in kids or adults are Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists. www.aacap.org should list some in your area. You could also look for a pediatric neurologist who also treats adults and specializes in behavior. As for health insurance, pay out of pocket, this is your health we're talking about. You can do many things. Some people use medication to help control the symptoms. Others receive counselling. One thing you can do that will only cost you about $10.00 or less is to find a book that may help you understand the connection that foods may have with ADHD. Foods can affect behavior, concentration, and mood, as well as other factors. I experienced this with my son, and using the book called, "Allergies and the Hyperactive Child", by Dr. Doris Rapp, helped so much. (Used booksites online). This book would pertain to any age person, as the foods affect you, no matter what age you are. The book discusses different things you can do to help, if this is the case, as well as different symptoms that many people with ADHD, can show a connection to food intolerances. I found the book to be very informative and helpful. There are also many other books with more natural approaches to ADHD to be found.

Your community mental health agency should be able to offer counseling at a reduced or sliding rate. Who told you that you have ADHD? Maybe that person can refer you to some local sources. Remember, if you are a college student, most campus' have counseling services. Most of all, don't worry, you will figure it all out and be able to cope better at work. The website below may be able to offer some advice or links to treatment.

Go to UC San Diego, and see if they are having a study for ADHD, and need volunteers. If they are, they will test you and give you medicine, at least for free, and maybe even pay you for showing up.

Here is the phone number to call to see if they are presently accepting volunteers for their ADHD study:

You do not need a psychiatrist or specialist. If you have a good primary care physician that you like, talk to him or her.
