I graduated university almost 2 years ago, and have been working at crappy, boring (oh so boring) jobs since then. I now know what I want to do - (be a professional writer - not necessarily creative, but I want to work with words for sure), but REALLY am not ready to go back to being a starving student (especially now that I am getting older and am liking having real paychecks!).

So what would you do? Go back to school and suck it up for a chance at career-happiness? Or suck it up at jobs I can't stand and slowly find my way in the writing world unguided?

p.s. I live with my fiancee and we'll likely be getting married soon. He doesn't make enough to support us both.

thanks!

Start Writing! The worst affliction of any writer is to sit around not writing anything. If you love words, get to work! Start writing some basic pieces, short stories, fake newspaper articles, anything to get your mind working.

Find out if you can market your writings to anyone or use them as samples to get a job at a newspaper/magazine as a writer/reporter. Find any remotely interesting job where you are writing and start there. Get in with a great company, possibly go back to school at night, and move your career ahead.

Check out some classes at a local community college and get some good books at the book store about writing and get going. Get a portfolio together and then find your own way. Work hard and you will get lucky!

Good luck!

My sister is a successful writer of fiction and non-fiction. She has her degrees in Pre-med (BS), and Computer Science (Masters). She didn't go back to school to "learn to be a writer". You already have the skills necessary if you finished a degree. What you may not have is talent and college can't teach you that. Write articles for local papers and magazines. Try to get published. Hire an agent (usually a group agent unless you get VERY busy).

Going back to school to learn to "write" is just killing time and wasting money. If you have what it takes, you can start right now.

Hey,

I can tell you from experience that going back to school isn't easy. I work 2 jobs, have a 3 year old son, and I take two classes at a time. Believe me, it isn't easy but I know I have to do it. I wanted a job that I could wake up every morning and want to go to. School is difficult but it is definitely the way too good.

Good luck!

I would go back to school ... but take it slow... maybe you could take internet courses and work at the same time. Real Paycheck + working toward something you love. Yeah you'll be tired, but in the end won't it be worth it?

Suck it up and go back to school. I waited until I was 42 to do that and I could have skipped 20 years of misery if I had sucked it up and done it sooner. Suck it up!
