Meralgia paresthetica is a disorder characterized by tingling, numbness, and burning pain in the outer side of the thigh. The disorder is caused by compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve as it exits the pelvis. It more commonly occurs in men than women, and is generally found in middle-aged or overweight individuals. People with the disorder frequently report that it appears or worsens after walking or standing. The skin is often sensitive to touch. Meralgia paresthetica is associated with clothing that is too tight, pregnancy, diabetes, and obesity.

Is there any treatment?

Treatment for meralgia paresthetica is symptomatic and supportive and usually involves wearing looser clothing, weight reduction, and avoiding prolonged standing or walking. Gabapentin and other medications may alleviate symptoms. In very few cases in which pain is persistent or severe, surgical intervention may be indicated. In some cases, the disorder may spontaneously disappear.
I would guess no Doc would operate unless the Patient has first tried all the above. Chances are they will not operate.

Check here a very effective sciatica natural treatment http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

I have been in pain for about 6 weeks which has been getting steadily worse and unbearable. No pain medication I have tried helped me including Gabapentin. I was going to give up my daily walk to the park it got so bad. Then I did some research online and found a website called Drugs.com and found this info:

Antiarrhythmics: These medicines are usually used to keep your heart beating normally. They may also help decrease pain.

I went to my doctor and brought the info with me. There is a heart medication called Metoprolol that will give immediate relief. It is taken once per day at night and does not seem to be causing any side effects.
I started on it in the evening a week ago and have not had any pain since the day I started on this medication.

Here is the website that was most helpful to me:

I hope you will try this and get some relief as I have.
