it depends on the school ,the level and the 14 yr old.
mouthpiece, shin gaurds, gloves and head gear with cage a must... cup save for mma and wrestling.

if your 14 yr old has no control and likes to use heavy hands the reciprocator/partner will do the same. after the first punch or kick is thrown things should be established...control is learned and sometime takes time. he and his partner need to go over basics constantly and he needs to verbally tell his partner where he stands. he can say lets spar full out or tell him i want to work on my combinations and footwork so we'll go light........communication is key... 14 is not that young my son spars and he's 6.

Hmm 14 years old is very common in Thailand, and Muay Thai is usually their whole life so of course they spar. But in Thai land the rules are much more different in America where as in Thailand they have full contact with only gloves. As where as in America they have Muay Thai but not nearly as brutal and a lot less contact as in Thailand. But i'd recommend that the gear for a 14 year old consists of mouth piece, gloves, foot guards and cup...But i would strongly advise not to take up the sport for children and mainly for adults as the injuries can leave kids crippled for life.

Really depends on the school itself. I take your talking about the U.S. schools. Some are to cheap to pay the higher insurance costs, and don't do full contact sparring. But for the ones that do They will wear headgear, mouth piece, cup, gloves, and sometimes rib protector, and shin guards. Sparring will be hard with full force strikes, and constant pressure. No kiddie point fighting in Muay Thai.

muay thai wears protection? that's a first.

I wouldn't let your kid go for full contact before he/she has fully grown up (both physically as mentally).
But if you can't stop him/her, the answer is yes, the 14 year old will spar.

All Muay Thai students spar full contact.

Generally speaking, you can wear as much padding as you want to. I typically used a mouthpiece, and wore a cup, handwraps, gloves, and ankle supports.

In Thailand, some kids start from five years old. But the age doesn't matter. As long as you train properly, you'll be able to reach the person starting from that age's level.

I would think so. You should start light and work up to medium. Full contact is tough on the body after many years. It is a young man's game.
For training/safety I recommend a moutpiece, cup, helmet, hand guards and foot guards.

Have fun.
