Its an emotional process one feels from reading a piece of enticing literature or listening to a very good charasmatic speaker.
People have been using this "feeling the spirit"gimmick on people for hundreds of years. To get new converts a certain religion would match their organ music to the speed of the human heart.
Sneaky huh,but its all about capturing and leading the imagination...and when that happens then you feel this so called spirit.
History is filled with people who have done this. For good and bad.

This question is sound, so a sound answer is needed. Have you ever opened a can of goods or a bottle of liquid? I think you have. Notice in all cases a matter comes out. To open our heart to God means something must come out of us. The answer is this, truth is in our hearts and only Truth must come out to God. For an examples read Exodus 32:30-33, Judges 16:17-18, and Luke 18:13. What you are looking for is their Truth coming out of their mouths, and if you see their Truth, then their hearts are opened to God. When we speak our Truth, then our hearts are opened to God. I hope this helps you understand.

It's hard to describe and yet a great feeling. You have to have faith in God. Ask Him sincerely to be your savior and Lord and to fill you with the Holy Spirit. Tell Him that you are sorry for your sins and that you accept Jesus death as payment for them. That's what it means to open ones heart. It's really to open ones mind and to be humble. Once you do, a peace will come over you that is beyond human understanding. But it doesn't end there. Pray whenever you feel like it and have a relationship with God. Read His Word and give all your worries over to Him. That is, instead of harboring anger or resentment for example, I just say:" God, I don't want to get angry. Please deal with this person and allow me to be patient." It works because God is real.

The best way to do it is through prayer. Pray to God and ask Him to give you a listening heart to His leading, His guiding, His word, His correction. And of course, it needs to be sincere. And then read His word, the bible. That is the material out of which God builds us from the inside out, into the image of His son, which is His goal as long as we are on this earth.
He will take care of the rest.

You need to accept that you are a sinner and that Jesus died to take the punishment for your sin. That He came back to life and went up to heaven and that because He did, so can you. Then ask Him to forgive you and to come into your heart and if you really believe and mean it, He will come in. You will know when He has.

God has made His presence known to me. I never consciously let Him in my heart, but when I tried to deny Him, He would not let me go.

To remove all barriers, all conceptions of "self" that are used to seperate "you" from everything else, to perceive God in all things, at all times, simultaneously.
Not easy if you really don't want it (think you do, pretend you do, claim you do, but then struggle to do it because you keep choosing to protect your "self".
