Rapid weight gain, pregnancy, rapid muscle growth as with weight lifting. They recommend cocoa butter, but I don't think it helps much.

You get stretch marks when your skin has been stretched beyond its means. Skin has elasticity, but only to a certain point. Once it's stretched beyond that point, the collagen fibers grow in spaces they're not supposed to and become hardened. A raised area appears on the surface of the skin as a "stretch mark". You can try coconut oil or vitamin E oil, but you may have it for life.

You get them by growing larger at a faster rate than your skin. Other than surgery there is no proven cream or lotion or potion to rid yourself of them. However, try using cocoa butter as a preventative measure. My wife has had two children without a single stretch mark. We are now having twins, and so far it is still working out for us.

I don't think there is any way to really get rid of them. I think some people just get them and others don't. I know people use cocoa butter etc but I haven't seen it work.
